Scuba diving with a fistula
Does anyone out there have any opinion if a person can go scuba diving
when they are on dialysis? The doctor said it was ok, but I wonder if
he thought much about the wet suit going over the arm that has the
fistula or was speaking of diving in general, not realizing that the
rubber suit fits rather tight. Ange

Have a great day!!

Re: Scuba diving with a fistula

Wow, scuba diving while on dialysis. Impressive.

I would recommend scuba diving after dialysis.

Jokes aside, as a fellow dialysis patient I don't see a problem.

If it is a very well developed fistula then the wet suit's constriction
should be irrelevant.

Is the wet suit overly tight?

Re: Scuba diving with a fistula
Actually it is my son who scuba dives, but unbeknowst to me, after I
wrote this he told me that that he brought the wet suit to his fistula
doctor and even put it on, and there was enough room between the fabric
and the skin that the doctor said it was ok. I still worry, but thanks
for your post. Ange

Have a great day!!

My team of nephrologists said no scuba diving while on dialysis! One
of the five doctors was a scuba diver and stated very emphatically
that you cannot go scuba diving while on dialysis.

Re: Scuba diving with a fistula
That is one of the first questions that my son asked because he loves
scuba diving. He does not do deep scuba, but does go about 15 to 20
feet, and his doctor said ok. I wonder why your team would say that if
there wasn't something about it to back them up. Personally, I do not
think it is a good idea, but Im only his mother. He is a grown man and
would probably listen to his doctor rather than his mother. Anyway if
you ever find out the reasoning behind their opinions, please let me know
so I can pass it on to him. Thanks,

Have a great day!!

If memory serves it has something to do with the way the body handles
the increased pressure due to depth underwater. Your kidneys come
into play for some reason or other. He explained it to me about 12
years ago and was quite the expert since he was an avid diver and a
nephrologist. He told me that under no circumstances was I to be
allowed to scuba dive while on dialysis.

I haven't seen that doctor since my kidney transplant over five years
ago. I did go into some detail in my preceding message.

Re: Scuba diving with a fistula
Thank you for your post. I have an appointment with my nephrologist in
a couple of weeks, and you can bet that that will be one of my first
questions to him. This visit I will be seeing my son's doctor partner,
so we will see what kind of response he gives me. I'll keep you posted,
but it makes sense to me. Ange

Have a great day!!
