My mother in law has just been prescribed Forteo and I was
wondering if anyone here has used it and what the results
were.  She has already had several vertebral fractures and
undergone vertebroplasty last summer.  Has been on Fosamax
and myacaltin (sp?) for about a year, but apparently they
aren't helping.  Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Forteo is prescribed by an injection. It s fairly new on the market.

I know of people who has to take it as the other osteoporosis Meds did
not help or they had got a re-action to them.

Maybe you could check the Forteo website to get answers to your
questions.

I have a friend that takes the daily injections.  She could not afford it
without the medicard plan.  I think its something like $700 a month here,
Ridiculous!!!  I really hope it works for her and for your mother!

I've looked through the website, but was really hoping for
some feedback from patients who've used forteo, not just the
info the manufacturer puts out.

has your friend had any side effects?  I know that it is
quite expensive!  the needle looks very small in the
literature, is it fairly painless?

My friend is in her 70s and has taught her self to self inject (with the kit
that comes with the meds).  She says it really doesn't hurt!  She has not
taken it long enough to be tested again, but her oral meds were doing
nothing!!!  So this was a last resort..and prescribed by the doctor that
helped develope the system (actually don't know if that was the med itself
or the delivery system).

My thoughts would be, if there is anything -- that I can afford -- that
would keep me from laying in bed with a broken back or hip, it would be
worth the risk!!!!!  even if quite painful!! (which its not).  Quality of
life just decreases drastically as meaningful activities cease to exist.

Cee Cee:  I've been on Forteo since April, but haven't had any tests to see 
if
there are any benefits.  I will probably have another scan in December so I'
ll
know then or sooner.  I thought there was a urine/blood test that could be
performed to check on the progress of the Forteo on bone growth, but I don't
know the name of it.  Check with your doctor to see what it's called.  I
personally haven't had any problems with the injection except for a "slight"
feeling of dizziness a couple of times which has totally gone away.  The
injection is almost painless, and really simple to do, I just hope it works.

I took Actonel for a year without much improvement, so the Dr switched me to
Forteo.  My spinal bmd is -3.6, and I'm a post menopausal 52 year old, that 
went
through menopause early, with a family history of osteo..  I've also had ma
ny
back surgeries, and as a result am disabled from that due to constant severe
pain.
