1951 stop smoking book
Has anyone ever seen the book "how to stop smoking" by Herbert
Brean ? I found
the 1963 Cardinal reprint of the 1951 Vanguard publication. It offers
a money (35 cents)
back guarantee if you read it and "don't enjoy it and give up
smoking,". Ir's a real hoot.
It talks about how your Dr might advise you to "cut back", but after
the exam, you notice
how yellow his fingers are as you light each others smokes!
Other gems:
p32 Medically speaking, tobacco is not habit forming-- that is, ot does
not worm it's way into your physique and psyche as opium or cocaine
do."
It also says you may want to keep some cigarettes around after you
quit, so you'll have some to offer your guests ! More than half the
population were smokers, you were expected to smoke to be "A regular
Joe" It even says (on other words) not to feel like a wimp when you
turn down cigarettes, because, after all, almost half the people were
non-smokers!
The book makes a brave effort for the times, I guess, and gives some
sound advise, a la Allen Carr but seems somehow amateurish or naieve by
todays standards.

O yeah, just missed the 2's;

Two months, two weeks, three days, 17 hours, 6 minutes and 36 seconds.
1594 cigarettes not smoked, saving $597.84. Life saved: 5 days, 12
hours, 50 minutes.

Re: 1951 stop smoking book

Now you got me curious, lol. A 1951 publication? Wish I quit back
then, while it still wasn't habit forming. ;)

Congrats on the meter, it looks better than ever,
Robin.

Re: 1951 stop smoking book
When I was a kid in the early 60s I remember at school they showed us a
cartoon about how bad smoking is for you. It showed a cartoon man "coughing
his fool head off" (his head actually rolling off of his body) The cartoon
made it clear that if you smoked you'd end up "coughing your fool head off".
Then the teacher explained that people smoked because they needed it "like a
baby needs to suck its thumb or its bottle".

When I got home and told my Dad (who smoked) about this, he asked "And how
did that make you feel about your parents?" I didn't know what to say. I
don't think that kind of film helps if everyone around you is smoking,
especially your peers when you're a teenager.
