Raloxifene
Hello

Is anyone here taking raloxifene? I've just been prescribed it because
my latest DEXA showed lumbar spine T-score -3.4. I am 65. No
fractures so far. I specifically asked for raloxifene because I have
heard it has fewer side-effects than the bisphosphonates but I'm not
sure how effective it's going to be.

I'm also taking supraphysiological doses of thyroid supplement, both T3
and T4, for treatment of depression. I'm concerned about the thyroid
supplements and raloxifene potentially fighting each other, with
possible result (I fear) that the depression might recur and/or bone
density might not improve.

I realize that this enquiry may not be welcome here because I asked
about raloxifene here once before and my enquiry seemed to cause some
annoyance. I beg your patience as you never know, someone might be
reading who is taking raloxifene and might have some comments, and that
would be very useful to me. Replies by email welcome.

Thanks.

Daisy

Drug therapy of any sort is liable to raise a bit of a ruckus here; sorry
if we got overheated. We do, sometimes.

I have no answers to your questions, but your pharmacist might. Most
pharmacists seem to be happy to answer such questions, but of course,
they'll only have the official line to give you.

Best of luck in your search for answers.

Re: Raloxifene
Thanks for your reply. I'm hoping to hear from women who actually have
experience with raloxifene, rather than pharmacists. If there are any
women who use raloxifene who happen to read this group (which is not
all that likely, I know), I realize that they probably won't post to
the newsgroup, for fear of being shouted at, but perhaps I will get
some replies by email.

Actually, if you get so much thyroid supplements, you start to become
hyperthyroidic, you may increase the chance of osteoporosis. So that
should be monitored.

There a number of pages on the web addressing raloxifene and
hypthyroidism. This one,
<http://www.menopausejournal.com/pt/..00042192-20041

saZ4Mm!-85436088!-949856145!9001!-1> (or
<http://makeashorterlink.com/?T2CE5355C> ) suggests that the raloxifene
boosts the T3 and T4 in the body.

We're not completely anti-drug here. We just don't care for the attitude
that menopause in itself is an illness that should be (medicinally)
treated, is all.

"Of any sort"?? What about the methimazole (Tapazole) I take for
hyperthyroidism, or the Avapro I take for high bp, for example?

I *think* you probably really meant for menopausal symptoms, or in this
case, for osteoporosis? OTOH.. thinking about it, my insomnia is a
menopausal symptom, & after trying everything else under the sun -
melatonin, calcium, valerian, etc., I gave up & asked for prescription sleep
med. Beats going to work & functioning (or trying to) on 3 - 4 hours of
sleep.

I don't know much about raloxifene and haven't taken it myself.
I usually start my research on any drug at http://rxlist.com.

Nope. I meant any sort of drug therapy.

Lordy, I miss Terri.

I'm 61 and know a lot of women in real life, some with osteoporosis,
some with osteopenia, who are my age and older, I don't know of
anyone taking raloxifene, though some do take other bone drug
therapies. Doctor's don't seem to prescribe it, at least where I live.

There is no proven evidence that taking raloxifene prevents *serious*
fractures. Perhaps that is why. Do some more homework.

*No* drug therapy? As a group, *any* drug therapy, for *any* condition, "is
liable to raise a bit of a ruckus here"? Count me out of that one!
