Yoga and the Bible
First things first. I'm not Buddhist, and I don't do those weird
chants. OK, now that that's out of the way. Yoga is a part of me. It
lets me focus my energy on the breath. Breath is the key and is a major
component of a daily or even tri-weekly practice. Yoga is a way for me
to wind down when I get too energized, and it's great for helping me
calm down when I'm upset or frustrated. I do about 20 minutes three
times a week. The other two days, I work out on my stair stepper. Yoga
can be a great way for you to relax or just slow down. Stop for a
minute and think. When is the last time you relaxed? No, I mean really
relaxed. It's been a while, huh? Well, no matter what you do to relax
normally, it doesn't last, does it? No? Well, try yoga. I did and I
love it. Most people have some misconceptions about yoga that I will
try to get cleared up right now. They think the positions are hard.
Some of them are quite advanced, and shouldn't be attempted unless
you've been practicing for at least a year. However, perfecting the
pose is not your goal in yoga. Your goal is to breathe slowly in and
exhale slowly out. Besides, if you are a beginner, they're are
positions that they call modified poses. These are good to work on
first, then work your way up to the regular posture.
Next, to keep balanced between your "mind, body, and spirit", you need
some sort of spiritual and moral guidance. This for me comes in the
form of Bible study. I feel far more focused when I've done my morning
yoga and Bible study. I also do my evening Bible study to wind down the
night before I go to bed. I use devotional guides and inspirational
books in addition with my Bible study. If you don't have a devotional
guide or an inspirational book to give you direction in your Bible
study, I suggest you subscribe to BeliefNet's newsletter for inspiring
stories, daily prayers, and Bible readings. Or you can start in the
Psalms or Proverbs and work your way through that way. Either way,
having balance between your body and spirit is an excellent way to start
your day.
