I'll answer just to your questions.

.  Is this done by remembering what it is
like to breath out while we breathe in?

As you may notice, I used many times word "automatically" on site
to bring the attention to already established reflexive habits and
inclinations both physical and mental.
Your question is extremely important. You are asking - Is this done by
remembering..? And the answer is that you have to remember as long as
the new reflex is not working, that I call practice; then, when the
reflex will kick in, it is extremely important to forget (or in style
in your letter - to discard the role of the mind as a tool to
establish this reflex) about technique.

To add, there are many people who are searching for the right technique
not for themselves but to socialise or to make money. For them this
answer is to hard to swallow, as they have to "forget to progress"
which is destroying all their ambitions.



Second answer;
Is there a possibility that there is a greater process at work here?

In my view, the normal breathing itself is a miracle, as it is (again
automatically - without remembering) like a machine, cuts the
portions of spirit and transfers them into the body - to each reflex
and the habit, creating the stable body-awareness to all breathing
forms of life.
If you can reverse this sentence, you will have a perfect picture how
this technique works.
