Radio Nonbiri

Celebrating the New Year with a
collection of all Asian music

Among the artists and instruments you'll hear in this New Year
special are:

=B7AGATSUMA and the YOSHIDA BOTHERS, three young players redefining the
role of the shamisen, a three-stringed instrument similar to a banjo.

=B7KINOHACHI, another young player helping to shape a new role for the
shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute.

=B7HIDEKI TOGI, classically trained and specializing in ancient Japanese
court music, this well-respected composer was the first to use the sho
(an ancient wind instrument) in contemporary settings.

=B7RIN, one of Japan's newer entries into the field, a trio of young
ladies who play koto, shamisen and shakuhachi and who are trying to
capture more of the youth market by emphasizing vocals and pop
arrangements.

=B7SEICHI KYODA, a producer was has worked with many of Japan's new
trad artists, helping shape a sound that has been featured on two of
his own projects, Ma-Ka and Sorma.

Also featured are several Chinese artists who have made their careers
in Japan, including:

=B7WEI WEI WU and CHEN MIN, two female players of the erhu, a
two-stringed violin.

=B7WU FANG, perhaps the most popular and well-known artist playing the
koto, a 13-24 stringed instrument much like a zither.

=B7JYOSHI JYUNI GAKUBO, known in the west as the 12 Girl Band, the group
made their professional overseas debut in Japan and brought the Asian
classical-crossover into the mainstream two years ago.

A few western artists playing Asian instruments in contemporary
settings are also featured, including:

=B7BRUCE HUEBNER, an American master of the shakuhachi based in Tokyo
who with pianist Jonathan Katz produces Japanese-infused jazz and world
music.

=B7RILEY LEE, another American shakuhachi master, presented in this
week's program in two very different contexts, one with dj/producer
Small Defense, the other with harpist Marshall McGuire.

Many other artists are featured in the program. Please check the
Playlist section of the website for links where you can learn more.
