NHS (UK) Report On LASIK Risk Brings Out The Usual Cast of Critics
Glenn,
One would and should expect criticism to come from those who are well
vested in LASIK (which includes your "patient advocacy group," the
CRSQA).The NHS has struck a blow to the false idol of ophthalmology -
its sacred, golden calf, LASIK. And more blows will be coming.

Have you forgotten the fuss that was made in Canada when the Canadian
Medical Society ruled that more than 50% of LASIK (and PRK) patients
suffered a loss of contrast sensitivity. As such, they wanted annual
contrast tests on LASIK patients to insure that they were safe (for
others) while driving. The Canadian Ophthalmic Society fought this
tooth and nail to have this overturned. They succeeded despite a number
of studies that supported their findings.

With the election behind us, I thought the political season was
over..politics have no place in refractive surgery.

Re: NHS (UK) Report On LASIK Risk Brings Out The Usual Cast of Critics
Most certainly the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance
exists because refractive surgery - primarily LASIK - exists, but to
suggest we have a "vested" interest is at the very least, misleading.

Sure I remember the Canada issue. And there was Dr. Jory banging the
drums about a similar German situation. LASIK still causes a loss of
contrast sensitivity. This has been studied, measured, and published
in many articles. That does not mean that people lose functional
vision after LASIK. After all the uproar, everyone saw the uproar to
all be about a red herring. Obviously, others like you prefer to cast
aspersions that are never substantiated.

These "chicken littles" still can't help themselves. They will always
spin even a positive account into disaster city. What they will never
realize is that even most chimps are smarter than they are.
