<schizophrenia> plus <as medication for schizophrenia> assistance pls
hello readers

I have been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, and find smoking
eases my troubled mind. i do not use it as a crutch, more like a
wheelchair. i have tried the patches, which either a.make me sick ,
and the gum, which doesnt really kill the cravings. the issue is two
fold. psychological and physical. this i understand. i seek a peaceful
death, so atm am not concerned with the long term health related
issues. but the reason i want to quit is i live with my mother and
will HOMELESS unless i quit!!!!!!!!!

can anyone recommend behavioural strategies(i do it out of boredom>no
money and very unhappy) to rid the thing that will leave me homeless?

my thought disorder makes it very hard to make this committment to
quit

THANKYOU READERS. I WOULD MORE THAN APPRECIATE REASONS TO QUIT AND
*HOW* TO DO IT SUCCESSFULLY. PLS email me. this is a real email addy,
and a real person

lucy

Re: <schizophrenia> plus <as medication for schizophrenia> assistance pls
Hey Lucy, welcome to AS3. First of all, a lot of people here
have used smoking as a crutch and if you stick around you'll
find there are a lot of us with 'mental disorders' for lack of a
better term. (eh, I'm Dutch, don't know what to call it.) Various
forms of depression, personality disorder and what not. Even
a very successful quitter with schizophrenia shared a quit with
us not too long ago.
I'd say stick around alt.support.stop-smoking and share your
quit with us. There's more people here that'll more or less know
what you're going through. If you want to check out behavioral
strategies the first place that comes to mind is ddsteve's place.
http://www.cognitivequitting.com Loads of great advice there
as well.

One more thing Lucy (with all due respect) do not set yourself
up by thinking your condition is 'special' and make it harder for
you to quit. Like I said, it is possible and the addiction has a way
of making us all think we're exceptions to the rule. They still need
to come up with a condition that makes it impossible to quit smoking
coz thus far there isn't one. This *is* doable. Best regards and
welcome again,
Robin.

btw, I'll post this to the board as well as email you. If you think
email works better for you I'd advice you to mail the 'behind the
scenes group' we have going here. The mail addy is:

Lucy,

I found this to be very helpful:

http://www.cognitivequitting.com/

Maybe all of y'all should read it.

I say this to indicate my total lack of knowledge or understanding of
your situation If you can keep a sense of humor about it and
struggle through reading at the above website, it might be helpful.
Don't worry about going back multiple times and skipping around. I
did and it was a huge help.

My dads death from lung cancer was anything but peaceful in case you think
smoking would cause a peaceful death. It was several years of feeling like
he
was suffocateing. Just walking a few feet to the bathroom was more than he
could handle. He lived that last year and a half in a chair with an oxygen
machine beside him and limited to a tube running from it to him. He hated
everyone around him and blamed everyone around him. He was like a rabid dog
 in
those last days. I hardly call his death peaceful. He was 76 and had smoked
since he was a teenager. So decide for yourself how peaceful it is.
