Nerve Damage Question
Is it possible, if located, to repair a damaged nerve? Husband and I
spent some time going over my home file and both concluded a damaged
nerve is the cause of my not knowing that I'm about to have BM. I
have some notes where the GI doc seems to agree. It seems to fit why
they all say that biofeedback will not work. We both think the
damaged nerve in question might not be damaged but trapped in a bunch
of adhesions at my original appendectomy site (my CP site). I have
had several surgeries, local anesthetic, general and no anesthetic
(not fun, but surgeon was trying to see if he could find the actual
pain spot and I had to be fully awake, according to him, to respond.
I will NEVER submit to that torture again without assurance that it
will be productive!) in that area to try to find a trapped nerve with
no luck at all. Different doc and surgeon notes we have say they
think a nerve is trapped there and the cause of the pain. Neurontin
however was useless in dealing with the pain and I thought nerve pain
responded to that. 10 mgs of methadone 3 times a day with dilaudid for
breakthrough, very rarely now, keeps the pain level at a 1 -2. Does
this scenario make sense? If so, and they could find the nerve
responsible, they could fix that, maybe remove it, then biofeedback
would strengthen the external sphincter muscle, and possibly resolve
both the Chronic Pain site AND the incontinence. They were able to
test the anal area muscle and nerves with the emg, which came back
normal leading me to think the damaged nerve is higher up. If a nerve
is dead is it dead for good? Do nerves regenerate if damaged in other
areas of the body?

One surgeon told me nerves look like transparent angel hair pasta and
are very difficult to locate problem ones, trapped ones, etc. but it
can be done. I have never asked if a damaged nerve could be fixed.
Any thoughts?

Nat
