HI,
I haven`t posted here for awhile. I just had a question for anyone that may
have been in this situation. I am a diabetic with renal imparment.
Currently I need to lose about 40lbs. For my healths sake and my self image.
Has anyone ever used the slimfast diet plan is it contraindicated with the
renal imparment. I plan to ask the dietician at my next visit but I though
some of you folks may have an opinion.
thanks Mike in Canada

Hi Mike

I would think there is too much Potassium and Phosporous in SlimFast.
For example here's the French Vanilla:
http://www.slim-fast.com/products/p...?product_id=696 It
has 500 or so of potassium and 50% of a person without ESRD requirement
of phosphorus which probably is a lot more than I can have being on
dialysis. But if you're not on dialysis ask the dietician.

Hi thanks for the response. I saw the dietician today and got the go ahead
to use the slim fast optima once a day for meal replacement. Fortunate for
me that I am not on
dialysis. The potential problem could be with the Pottassium. Hence only
once a day rather then the standard two. Thanks again anymore experiences
with this or comments would be most welcome!!! Mike in Canada

Just a comment here. When your system is not "normal", you should
always be leery of so called "natural" substances and supplements.
Always consult with your doctor or dietician. What may be safe for the
general population to use may be deadly to someone dealling with an
impaired system.

Yes Dave that is very important to remember. I went over all my blood
results with the dietician ect, and she said for now it is ok to use Slim
Fast. We will keep a close watch on my pottassium in particular as well as
the rest of my blood work.
Thanks for the comments Dave.

Mike: Did the dietitian give you any limits yet on phosphorus and
potassium, and one of those great little renal diet charts listing the
various foods high in each? Or are you at that stage yet? I found that
one things most of the provinces in Canada did well with our "medicare"
was in this type of situation. I was sent by my nephrologist directly to
a renal dietitian to "get with the program". In my case, I went straight
from diagnosis to dialysis, but most of his patients were sent
specifically to a renal dietitian as soon as he thought it necessary.

The renal dietitian also followed up on all patients to make sure they
were adjusting to their diets, and also met with family members if they
were the meal preparers in the family.

Hi Mike

As a diabetic with renal impairment, have you had a look at the many G.I.
books and websites around? Here is a link to one that I use
http://www.glycemicindex.com/

Foods with low GI have the double benefit of lowering blood sugars over the
day and allowing you to lose weight gradually by replacing high GI foods
with low GI foods.

Good luck

Judanne
