? for anyone who's stopped prednisone

| I'm wondering has anyone experienced severe muscle pain when going off
prednisone? My transplant finally quit after almost 10 years and I started
back on dialysis. I cut my pred from 7.5 to 5 when starting dialysis. I had
mild aches and pains nothing for 6 weeks but nothing severe then about a
week ago it got bad. I've had it in my knee, my hands, my back and my left
foot has been the worst it's to the point that I had to go to crutches
because I can't put my full weight on my foot. It's get better leaves on
joint then I wake up the next day with another in pain.
The nephrologist that the dialysis unit told me to go back to 7.5 the
alternate to 5 doing every other day. Right now I'm just taking the 7.5
hoping this goes away and we can try it again only dropping it by 1 mg at
time.
This doesn't feel like the arthritis I have in my hip it's a different kind
of pain but I'm wondering if I should see a rhumatologist after suffering
with this for a week now.
Thanks
Celeste

| Sometimes when you are on steroids for an extended period of time, your
adrenal gland will shut down completely, as the steroid is very similar
to adrenaline. When you try to taper down the steroid, the adrenal
gland does not always restart production as quick as is expected, and
the generalized pain in the jointsm muscles and bones is what you can
experience. It should go away when the steroid is restarted. It means
you have to taper much slower. After my last transplant failed, it took
21 months to taper from 15 mg Prednisone. Eventually, this will
straighten out.

| Dave,
Thanks for the information. I knew to expect some pain but I never dreamed
it would be like this. It's not too bad this evening but I'm still using
crutches. I'm back on the 7.5 and we are waiting to see the results of my
PTH levels since those to can cause the kind of pain I am having.
How long did it take for the pain to subside after you increased your pred
back to what it was and then start weaning it down slowly again?
Thanks
Celeste

| Early on, it took about 10 days to get relief, but as we got closer to
being able to stop the Pred permanently, the time became less.

| Hi Celeste,
Have you seen all the responses on bit.listserv.transplant?
