What's Happened To This NewsGroup?

| Hi,
Just wondering why I haven't seen much activity here in a while. I've
learned much from reading the historical posts from everyone. Is there
another newsgroup or forum for this topic that is recommended?
Thanks.

There's bit.listserv.transplant but it's pretty quiet now too. Spring
has sprung and people enjoy being outdoors.

Hello,
Several days ago, I posted a message in a kidney related newsgroup to
provide some advice related to a book and some support since the poster's
child had a kidney disease. Someone later posted a message indicating that
I should not have posted my message since I was not a doctor. I call those
types of people "net cops". If he does the same thing to everyone that
posts a message in this and other kidney newsgroups--that could be the
reason that you do not see very many posts in kidney related newsgroups. I
know of at least one medical newsgroup that has almost no posts since
their are two net cops that never help anyone but instead use their
medical knowledge to criticize me and anyone else (except doctors) that
attempt to provide advice to people that ask for help. I hate the net
cops--they need to find another hobby.

They're everywhere. I can remember the same thing happening on CB radio
years ago - mind you, with all those beered-up teenagers getting on the air,
you needed *someone* to tell them to shut up!
As for the 'not a doctor' thing, this may be because the majority of users
are in America, and like it or not that is the land of lawyers - there is a
fairly real danger of litigation if you give advice and someone suffers
because of it. Only anonymity saves you then, but not everyone is that well
hidden (I use my real name here, for example.)
I feel a little safer here in Australia, but I still wouldn't give specific
medical advice to anyone, only relate my own experiences as far as it
assists someone else. That's only common sense...
Incidentally (going off at a tangent) I've been told by a registrar in the
renal unit that although I'm no longer eligible for a 'first grade' donor
kidney, they will put me on the list for what I guess you'd call
'refurbished' organs. These are ones removed from living patients that have
cancers, bad stones or polyps. Once the organ is removed, these defects can
be safely and completely cleaned up, then transplanted elsewhere. Has anyone
gotten one of these, or heard of it being done overseas, or is this a purely
Aussie idea? (We are well known for our scavenging prowess, ask any car
owner in the bush!)

Most sensible groups, & posters will have a disclaimer, eg 'my advice

Paul,
Thanks for your post. I use a fake name and fake email address to avoid
the issues mentioned in your post. For several months (many years ago) I
used my real name and real email address and the result was tons of SPAM
related to email. I don't mind dealing with the net cops but I have
noticed that some people never post again after they have been attacked by
a net cop. I believe that is the main reason that you don't see hardly any
posts in medical related newsgroups. I don't know why the net cops that
are doctors or medical experts don't use their knowledge to help people
instead of attacking people like myself that enjoy helping people.
I doubt that I would accept a refurbished organ unless it was my only
option. They may be able to eliminate bacteria and germs--but as you
know--if the internal structure of the kidneys or almost any other organ
is damaged--they can not fix that problem. It's not always possible for
doctors to see signs of all of that damage. Of course, I doubt that they
would implant any organ that had serious damage that was easy to detect
when the organ was examined. I am referring to the internal damage (eg
cells) that is more difficult to see when an organ is examined. I should
note that I am not doctor and am not an expert related to organs or
transplants--I am merely expressing my opinion.

Boy...I sure as hell wouldn't want someones kidney who had cancer, ouch!!

I've not had much of a problem with that. Indeed, the majority of unwanted
mail that gets past Optusnet's very good filtering is aimed at randomly
generated addresses, not copied from my Usenet posts.

I wouldn't choose to either if there was any other option, but frankly there
isn't in my case. I've looked into 'black market' methods, and it's not
viable money-wise (or safe IMHO.) The 'system' won't concider me for the
good donations and I simply don't have any family left who would be suitable
donors. Therefore in the unlikely event of being offered a 'scratch and
dent' organ I'll grab it!

At some point we all have to trust the 'experts', that's why they get the
big bucks. As you say, I doubt they'd use anything they were not confident
was 'safe', and further enquiries show that the Brisbane team have performed
such transplants on 5 or 6 patients with excellent results so far. Got to be
worth a shot...

Oops. Jason's not a very good liar, either. No netcopping there.
I won't waste my time exchanging posts with you. If your goal is to be the
only one that provides advice to people in kidney related newsgroups--you
may succeed. I subscribed to two different kidney related newsgroups and
have seen almost NO posts in either one of those newsgroups. I believe I
have discovered the reason. If you attack everyone that provides advice
the way that you attacked me--I don't blame posters (other than yourself)
for not providing any advice or support. I will not let net cops prevent
me from posting but I do know from experience that most posters never post
again in a newsgroup after they are the victims of one or more net cops. I
know of at least one newsgroup (related to cardiology) that has almost
been closed down by net cops that take turns attacking my friend Dr.
Chung--a cardiologist. Net cops have destroyed lots of medical newsgroups.

Yes - there's some idiot either selling his kidney or shilling some book

Do you have evidence indicating that Dr. Chung is not a cardiologist?
I do have respect for him. My only criticism is that his answers to questions
are really short--usually only one or two sentences.

You always make some good points in every post. I do have respect for
your medical knowledge even if we disagree related to the type of people
that should answer the questions of people that ask for help. I should
have made it more clear thqt I will not exchange posts with you related
to that issue. We both have a "fixed opinion" on that issue so it's a waste
of time and energy to argue about that point. You raised a new point which
is the reason I have made the last post and this post. Yes, I knew that
Chung has no hospital affiliation and has been fired from several posts.
However, I have seen NO data indicating that he is NOT a cardiologist.
I respect his knowledge of medical issues.
