Dealing with Leg Cramps?

| I'm on 60mg Lasix, 10 mg Noravasc with potassium restriction of
2000-3000mg or less of potassium per day. Using the UDSA National
Nutrient Database and measuring everything I eat, I'm hovering around
2400mg of potassium and am starting to get pretty bad leg cramps.Any
non-potassium soulutions out there to help prevent leg cramps?

The only other electrolyte that would help is sodium. Are you on a
sodium restriction as well? I would guess that you are on sodium
restriction since you're taking Lasix to shed water weight.
Exercise is another thing that causes cramping. A buildup of lactic
acid in the muscle causes cramping. If you are exercising it is
important to do "cool down" exercises so that lactid acid is flushed
from your muscles to prevent cramping.
Finally, if you are allowed to eat 3 grams of potassium a day you
should eat three grams or potassium to see if it will alleviate your
cramping.
Good luck,
Larry

Mickey, I'm not sure if my situation was exactly as yours.....I was on
peritoneal dialysis and began having lower leg cramps or lower leg seizures.
I was put on Gabapentin/Neurontin. It worked for me. It's now 3+ years post
K/P transplant, and I still take it due to occasional cramping/seizures.
Maybe that's something you could discuss with your physician.

Thanks for the information and congratulations on your transplant
success. I'm pre-dialysis and the doc says as long as I don't have any
debilitating symptoms and the blood labs stay as they are I'm not to go
on dialysis yet. I increased my potassium intake a bit (still under the
3000mg daily limit) and it seems to be making a difference. I'll ask
the doc about the gabapeentin/neurontin just in case the cramps return.

Gabapentin and Neurotin and the same drug. Neurotin is the brand name
and Gabapentin is the generic.

Oops! The correct spelling is Neurontin.

| Mickey,
Another thing to help with the cramps especially if you are getting them at
night it to do some stretching before bed. I complained to my neph about
the cramps and he told me to start stretching my legs that it would help.
He is right it does work. Every night I make sure I stretch the back of my
legs and my feet really good. I take the maximum dose of lasix and even
with taking a huge dose I don't often get cramps now as long as I remember
to stretch my legs

| Thanks for the suggestion Celeste. Hubby and I went for a nice long walk
today to enjoy the beautiful Spring weather. I'll be sure to do some
leg/foot stretches tonight before bed.

| Hi Mickey, I was and am getting leg cramps also. I mentioned it to my
doctor who wanted to put me on quinine tablets. But he also recommended
that I try tonie water with quinine. Since the taste isn't all that
great, I mix it with soda. That has seemed to help. Maybe you should
try it for a while with all your meals. Good luck. Ange
Have a great day!!

| Celeste, thanks so much. Your suggestion works! Last night, before bed,
I stretched feet and legs and....ta da.....no leg cramps!
