Author skipping a dialysis treatment

My son went away for the weekend and was unable to get a convenient time
slot for his regular dialysis treatment without going 25miles miles out
of his way. He consulted with his doctor, and his doctor said it was ok
to miss one treatment because he is doing so well and his numbers are in
sync. I wonder what after effects missing one treatment will do. What
can he expect? He will be 5 days without dialyzing. Has anyone gone
through this. Ange

He should be just fine. Just makes sure that he limits his fluid
intake and doesn't end up gaining six or eight kilos of fluid since
removing all that fluid will be difficult for him in one four hour
dialysis treatment.

As Larry said, he should be fine with a little care and planning. Be
more diligent about what you eat and about how much you drink.

I have done 5 days three times in my 19 years on dialysis, and have
always done very well. I actually did 6 days once because the
Interventional Radiologist I was using decided he couldn't stay late on
a friday to declot my access, and said he would not be coming back until
Tuesday. I had clotted on Wednesday about three hours after treatment.
He wanted to put in a catheter, but I refused. I have had a catheter 5
times and have had Sepsis 4 times. Never again. I did just fine this
time as well, although it was very difficult to control my eating for
that long. I definitely do not recommend doing 6 days unless you
absolutely have to. Skipping a treatment once in a while for a stable
under control patient shouldn't be a problem, but avoid it if possible.

Assuming he keeps to his dietary restrictions, he should be fine.

The problem with holidays is that you often feel the compulsion to ease
and relax attention to your restrictions and thats where the problems
start.

He went away, or is going to?? 5 days is a bit much IMO.. I feel rough
if I stretch a 2 day gap, but then if I do I always try to get extra
time at each end. Depends on the individiual I guess. Don't think my
doctor would let me do that without much concern.

My son went on a golfing weekend up in Maine. He was going to be able
to go to a place which was 8 miles away from him, but at the last
minute, the only time they could take him was in the morning. It isn't
as easy as you think when you travel, and the center tried to make those
arrangements for him well in advance. Anyway, the other place was 25
miles away in Portland Maine, so when he asked his doctor. he said ok.
He is back on his Tuesday, Thursday and Sat. schedule again, and when he
came back, luckily he didin't have alot of fluid, but he watched his
intake. He noticed that his hands and ankles were retaining a bit or
water but that was about all. He is dealing with PKD and is otherwise
healthy so I guess, that is in his favor.

Of course golf is more important than your health. !!!

It all depends on how much fluid comes off on each hook-up.
I have 1-2 killigrams that come off, and I could go a week or two with
out treatment. My kidneys are one third functioning, sometimes I think
the doctors want the ins money from my ins co.

Sorry to hear you did not feel well after two days. He went away for
the weekend and he missed his treatment on Sat only. If the doctor
didnt give him the ok, he would not have skipped. His numbers were good
and they felt he could. After the fourth day, however, he noticed that
his hands and ankles had a little edema, but that went away after his
Tuesday treatment. Iguess it depends on the person. Typically, a
person who has PKD kidney disease is generally healthy in other ways and
not like diabetics who have other issues going on at the same time. He
is on the transplant list, but that could take years but the time being,
dialysis is his only option and he is dealing with it with a very
positive attitude. Ange

Have a great day!!
