An athlete I know has no kidneys. He is on dialysis twice a week. I learned
of this just a few days ago, and was struck.

Can someone tell me how awful this is? To get down to the nitty-gritty, is
life expectancy not so good?

Some buddies of mine and I are considering recommending him for a special
award from the city, assuming his wife and coach say he and the team would
be cool with this.

Usually if on haemo-dialysis, a patient is required to be dialysed at
least 3 times a week.

Nonetheless, if he is persisting with athletics, this is impressive as
dialysis can not only be an inconvenience to one's lifestyle but can
also be draining of energy.

It can also drive up the potassium in between treatments, so, it has to be
done with some caution.

Are you sure you don't mean Protein?

I know when I do weights, the stress placed on muscles often causes
excess protein to be released into the bloodstram often causing an
elevated urea as well.

Then again he may NOT be kidney less, just have diminished renal function.
In which case dialysis twice a week could be a possibility. It took me
about 10 years post transplantation for the original kidneys to disappear
completely.
