| Has anyone been prescribed this med yet?
Irbesartan ( Avapro ) is a new pharmaceutical for type II's with
hypertension and kidney failure.
I'd like to know how well it's working for those who are taking it.
I'm thinking of asking my PCP to start me on it due to my kidney problems
recently.
Thanks in advance

| Well, it's not exactly new anymore. I was on Avapro for about 3 years before
I started dialysis. It's really no different in effect than any other drug
of its class, like Cozaar, Diovan, etc. It depends what you mean by kidney
problems, but for kidney disease, this class of drugs, close cousins of the
ACE inhibitors, are already commonly used for their renal protective
properties (current thinking, anyway). I went from about 40% kidney function
to dialysis in about 2 years while on Avapro, so, I wouldn't exactly say it
did anything for me except help control my blood pressure.

I've been on Losarta potassium (Cozaar) for about four years to try to
control my proteinuria, which went from 3 grams/day to 11 grams/day but
seems to be holding steady (knock wood). I already had very low blood
pressure, so the cozaar gave me REALLY bad headaches for the first few
weeks but I adjusted. I have primary idiopathic FSGS, though I am also
diabetic.

| I was on Avapro HCT and then when I went on dialysis just Avapro.
Avapro HCT has diuretic qualities but naturally these are useless when
you have no kidney function.
For me, it served its purpose.
I gave it up recently only because my blood pressure is under control
through regular dialysis and a semi-decent routine.
