Hello all

I am a T1 diabetic and I found loads of help in
alt.support.diabetes.uk. People were fab!

I was able to adjust my diet and have got my Hba1c down to 5.3 really
well controlled!

So I am asking here... my mother inlaw has just had kidney failure and
she will be on dialisys for the rest of her life (she is 81) can
anyone help with a diet which will be good for her please? I need to
know how to help her.
Many thanks

Hi Patti,

The best information is probably available from your physician and/or your local kidney center.
Although I am not a kidney patient, I am a caregiver for one. I know that, in general, you will
want to avoid high phosphorus containing foods. High levels of phosphorus can lead to extreme
itchiness, because calcium phosphate deposits just under the skin in needle-sharp crystals. It
also can lead to other nasty problems, including stiffening of the joints and arteriosclerosis
(clogging of the arteries). These latter two problems are caused by the same mechanism:
deposition of insoluble calcium phosphate. Therefore, it is vitally important that your mother
keep her calcium and phosphorus levels, and the product of calcium*phosphorus, within the proper
balance. Again, your physician is the best source of advice.

Here are some links you might want to check out:

I wish the best for you and your mother.

PS. It's not a good idea to include your real e-mail address in any newsgroup posting. The
reason is that low life spammers have software available to "harvest" e-mail addresses from
newsgroup posts. I removed your e-mail address in this reply.
