Hello

I am diabetic and I can measure my BG. My mother in law has just had
renal failure and been told she will be on dialysis all her life... is
there a way she can measure her need? May thanks

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. Her need for dialysis.

Though I now realise this is a rather silly question. Mother in law's
doctor had said to my husband "She will have dialysis as needed". We
did not know how she would measure her need for dialysis, or how she
would know when to go to hospital. Since then my hasband has spoken
to another doctor who tells us she will have dialysis three times a
week which will be arranged by the hospital.

Patti,

And when she starts will, most likely, be based on her latest creatinine
reading from a blood test. Has she had a fistula created in one of her arms
yet? If not, and the dialysis is to start shortly, she will have a catheter
inserted into her upper chest to allow her blood to flow to and from the
dialysis machine until her fistula has been created and is mature enough to
begin to use 3 times a week.

Hopefully she will deal well with it, but when she first starts, the change
to the body chemistry may make her unwell for a while. Eventually, though,
most people adjust and accept dialysis as just another routine in their
week.

Best of luck to your family.
