| Hi, looking for thoughts here. I'm a type 1 diabetic, I've been a
diabetic for roughly 14 years. I haven't been the best of diabetics,
been pretty sloppy in taking care of myself etc. My last a1c's were in
the 7's, and that's probably the best I have ever been in 14 years.
In the last 6 months I have had constant frothy urine, 3 or 4 days of
a swelling right foot, and increasingly itchy skin on my back and the
backs of my legs.
I figured these were signs of serious kidney problems and that my
years of being a poor diabetic, were catching up with me.
The itchy skin got so bad this week I went to the my doctor and he had
tests run, which all came up negative. I'm wondering if anyone has had
symptoms and not actually had problems? Or if I could be just starting
out with problems that aren't showing up on the tests?

I'm a type 2 diabetic who has maintained an HbA1c of 6% after becoing
diabetic after a course of steroids with primary idiopathic FSGS (a
disease unrelated to diabetes) and secondary very early diabetic
nephropathy and some other kidney problems. My FSGS is bad enough that I
am nephrotic. Despite maintaining a 'normal' HbA1c, I also have some of
the other complications of diabetes, including peripheral neuropathy,
etc.
The itchiness may be due to neuropathy or high BGs (one reason I keep
mine as low as possible is because I HATE how my skin feels when my BG
is over 120). Dehydration can also be a reason. There are lots of other
causes - your doctor is hte best source for an informed answer.
As for the swelling in one leg, that is something to be concerned about.
I have it; in my case it is venous stasis caused from blot clots. Be
sure to seek medical attention when it happens - it can be a symptom of
DVT, especially if you're someone who either sits a lot or stands a lot.
As for having kidney problems with all the tests being negative -
chances are very, very slight that there's anything going on there. When
I was diagnosed, *all* my tests came back abnormal, and I'm just in the
earliest stages of kidney failure.
Good luck and congratulations on the normal kidney test results! That's
great news.
