transplant troubles

| My sister had a transplant and is now having some odd problems. She's having
tremors, her creatitine is up to 11, and she had a UTI (urinary tract
infection). I am flabbergasted. I thought that she was supposed to be OK after
this? They have concluded that she's not experiencing a rejective phase, and
did a biopsy, but this news is troubling and the doc yesterday wanted to send
her home. She's in no condition to be at home by herself yet.
I live 45 mins away, my mom is looking in on her, but she fell in the hospital
yesterday, and we think that's the reason for her quick "go home" decision.
However, today her creatitine was 12.6, the doc said he didn't believe it and
is taking it again tomorrow morning, at which time they'll decide her fate.
I'm furious...help?

Hello Theresa. All I know is that a side effect of one (or some) of the
anti-rejection meds can produce tremors. The UTI is probably from the
immune system being compromised. I can't say for sure, but some others
here may have better answers for you.
Good luck!

| Theresa,
The tremors are normal to start with and will go away as the medications are
reduced. Everyone has them at some point in time through out their
transplant.
As for the creatnine level is this up from previously? It could be a bad
lab result that's why the doc is checking it again.....this happens. I know
when I finally went home after 10 days that my none of my labs were anywhere
near normal and it took a good 2 months to get a normal creatnine. My new
kidney didn't work at all till day 9 then finally right after they did a
biopsy it started to produce urine. Sometimes it takes 4 months or more for
one to stabilize. It doesn't all happen over night the body has to have
time to adjust to the changes from the transplant and the medications. It's
a slow process and takes a while to get everything adjusted just right. You
have to remember a transplant is NOT A CURE it's a form of treatment one of
the best forms of treatments but that is just what it is and it to comes
with risk.
I agree if she's fell she shouldn't be at home alone and most centers won't
release you unless you have someone there to take care of you. I can't
believe they would send her home because she fell, the last thing they want
is for her to hurt herself and her new kidney.

| Hey thanks..latest is her creatinine is down to 7-8ish, she is on dialysis
again, but it's not full pressure so as not to damage the transplant.
It is working, but a little at a time. Some of the meds she was on
(steroids), made her blood sugar go up, so they had to give her insulin, and
at one point, she was unconscious. She is slowly getting better, but is not
ready for home life yet. Thank God they kept her in. She's been hospitalized
since the 7th.
I also had the plug and play misconception (That is a funny metaphor, for
Windows and kidneys).

| Theresa,
It's good to know things are getting better although it's a little at a
time. I know it's frustrating and you want the best for her and as soon as
possible.......
The good news is the diabetes will probably go away as time goes on. Often
people develop it at the onset and as the meds are reduced it sometimes
leaves. As time goes on you'll be amazed at the difference in your sister
compared to before the transplant. It takes a while but the journey is well
worth it.

| Theresa.
I had tremors as a result of the high dose Neoral (cycosporine) i was
taking.
Due to the lowered dose of Neoral, I no longer experience tremors.
Also, transplantation is not an exact science and should never be seen as a
cure. Transplantation is simply another treatment which happens to be
preferred by most patients.
