Just DX'd advice pls.

| My kidneys have been degenerating for some time, so I guess I have
CKD. I had my first of four PROCRIT shot for anemia yesterday. My
first question, please is how about vitamin/mineral supplements? I've
always been high on Vit. C the B's and Multi's. Should I continue
heavy use of those
They gave me a couple of tapes, but they are so generic, not much
there.
People here probably represent the whole spectrum. How about my 2/3
scotch and soda every evening? I don't want to lose that/ (Probably
2.5 to 3 OZ total per evening)

You should tell your doctor about medication that you are taking and
that includes vitamins and especially any herbal substances, some of
which can themselves cause kidney failure. A vitamin prescription
called Nephrovite is sometimes prescribed for those with kidney
failure but you can buy the same thing over the counter. It is known
as B 100 and a lot less expensive. Nephrovite contains more folic
acid than B 100 so if your doctor decides that you need to take
Nephrovite and you decide to opt for the much less expensive B 100 you
will need a supplemental prescription for folic acid. Be especially
careful of any weight loss supplements. Many contain herbs that are
damaging to the kidneys and can cause kidney failure. Once again I
urge you to tell your doctor about any and all medications that you
take and seek his advice before taking anything that can be bought
over the counter. Even Motrin and Advil, both ibuprofen, can cause or
quicken kidney failure.

larry: Thanks for the input. I believe my PCP and Nephrologist each
have my 2 inch think "chart" so I hope one hand knows what the other
is doing. However you bring up a good point. My PCP thought 80 MG
per day of diuretic was plenty. My nephrologist QUADRUPLED this to
320MHG a day. I worry that amount will rob me of some minerals, etc.
Why is 80 enough for 1 doctor and another wants so much more? I gotta
trust someone. I don't take anything that is not in my charts except
OTC high dose vitamins and minerals. Is the following OK, you think?
4000 C four Theregran, 3 big OMEGA 3 AND 3 400 I.U E. each day. And I
also wsondedr whether I should drink more or less liquid. I dsrfink
lots of juices what does 320 MG of diuretic do with those.?
thanks again, Larry

You really should talk with your doctor(s) about this, Sando. If you
have any doubts at all get a second nephrologist's opinion. I always
get second opinions and have circumvented many problems that way.

Just because you have a 2-inch thick file, does not mean a doctor - even
the doctor that made it that thick - will ever read it. medical files are
notorious for being one way: data goes in, but rarely comes out (is read).
