Author Let's not be too hasty in our assumptions.

I think you're forgetting that sometimes, the financial situation is so dire
and desperate that it is no longer an issue regarding greed and rather an
issue regarding survival.

Often the issue of survival is not only that of the individual but that of
the family.

Whilst we can all agree that selling one's organs is illegal (on most
countries), the question of survival can often justify selling an organ as
much as buying an organ.

I think we are often too hasty in our assumptions about individuals, their
situations and decisions when looking from the point of view that we do.

Quite frankly, I would consider buying an organ if I had the cash and the
need tomorrow.

Luckily I don't have the need as I currently have a kidney transplant.

That's not to say I would not feel conflicted about the situation and
wouldn't take relevant precautions, but nonetheless, if done properly then I
would have the potential to help someone else as well.

I've probably started a flame war but it won't be the first (or the last).

My two cents worth.

Daniel.

Many articles and documentaries that have looked at these poor kidney donors
in third world countries have clearly shown that the only ones who profit
are the brokers and the sleezeballs who work those communities over trying
to convince poor, ignorant young men to sell a kidney with promises of
riches. Riches to them sometimes is as little as being able to buy a
motorcycle, or a TV. It's a one shot deal for a very small amount of money
that doesn't last more than a few weeks, if that. When the money is gone a
few days or weeks later, the only thing they have that they didn't before is
a big scar, and often, no medical care and no way to get any if they need it
(which they frequently do from the botch jobs done taking out their kidney).
I don't know how anybody with a conscience could rationalize contributing to
that scenario, but then, our current civilization is built on a foundation
of very shaky morals to begin with.
