"LASIK Patient: Doctor, ever since I had LASIK, my eyes are painfully
dry and irritated. They burn constantly.

LASIK Doctor: OK, I will insert some punctal plugs in your tear ducts.
That will be $500.

LASIK Patient: But, Doctor, you already inserted punctal plugs. My eyes
are still dry and painful. Is there anything else we can do?

LASIK Doctor: Give it six months.

LASIK Patient: But, Doctor, it's already been more than six months.

LASIK Doctor: Give it six more months.

LASIK Patient: But, Doctor, I need help. I am in constant pain.

LASIK Doctor: Take two aspirin and call me in six months.

LASIK Patient: Doctor, can you tell me why I have this bright white
goo, like whiteout, in the corners of my eyes?

LASIK Doctor: Switch to correction tape instead of liquid whiteout.

LASIK Patient: Doc, did you hear what I said, it's in my eyes!

LASIK Doctor: Don't put your face so close to the paper.

LASIK Patient: Doctor, have you ever seen this before?

LASIK Doctor: No, you are the only one in 25,000 successful LASIK
procedures who has ever complained of whiteout in your eyes.

LASIK Patient: I'm sorry, Doc, I have a hard time believing that I am
the only one with a problem.

LASIK Doctor: Do you want my help or not?

LASIK Patient: But, Doctor, you're NOT helping.

LASIK Doctor: You're not being compliant. I can't help you if you're
not compliant.

LASIK Patient: What do you mean, I'm not compliant?

LASIK Doctor: You haven't referred any friends or family members.

LASIK Patient: Doc, I'm here because I'm suffering from dry eyes!

LASIK Doctor: Are you using your artificial tears every 15 minutes as
instructed at your last visit?

LASIK Patient: Yes, but it is very expensive. Will I have to use them
for the rest of my life?

LASIK Doctor: Use them as needed, for as long as needed. This is the
kind of professional advice for which I am very highly paid.

LASIK Patient: I give up.

LASIK Doctor: (writing in patient's chart "Patient doing well") I'm
glad you're doing well. Here's a free sample of artificial tears. It
was nice to see you again."

Pathetic attempts to make a point by making the doctor seem like a
greedy, money-hungry, insensitive, mindless buffoon really negate any
potential credence to the arguement put forth by this anti-Lasik
person. Grow up.

What? LASIK surgeons aren't greedy, money-hungry insensitive mindless
buffoons? Apparently you haven't been reading their editorials lately.
Nothing beats their own words.

I have some news for you.. just about all members of the human race
are greedy money hungry insensitive mindless buffoons. The trick is
to find one of the very very VERY few people who are not in that
category.

If you are serious in your response then the delusions you have are
profound. First off, I would expect to be compensated for my expertise
and the sacifices I made to get to being a surgeon. You are paying for
my epxertise and knowledge. Second, I would think that corporate
America is more of a greedy entity then individual surgoens because
surgeons still deal directly with people. There is a human element
involved that helps keep you grounded whereas a corporate situation is
sterile and profoundly devoid of the realities associated with "the
little guy."

And are you to tell me that the plumber, auto mechanic, hair dresser,
sanitation engineer, and anyone else in the worforce is not out there
looking to somehow improve their financial position? Let's put this in
perspective. Are there greedy surgeons out there? Absolutely. Is it
more profund in the surgical community vs. the rest of Amerioca? I
doubt it.

Now let's address this from a business model of a Lasik office. If
Lasik costs $3-5 K a pop,the surgeon is not pocketing that entire sum.
For some reason the lay population thinks the entire fee of a medical
procedure is profit. People seem to forget there are business costs
associated with running an office (disposable supplies, staff
slaries/medical insurance/retirement/benefits packages, continuing
education and maintenance of licensure, liability/disability insurance,
maintenance and upkeep of facilities and equipment, utilities, etc) all
add up. The average overhead cost in a dental office is 65-75% BEFORE
you factor in the reduced fees insurance companies try to push on
dentists. That pushes overhead up to 90%.

So before you make generalized statements that seem based on some
envious basis regarding surgeon salaires, do a little research to back
up your claim. It may shed some light as to why things cost what they
do.

That generalized, flippant characterization with no proof or backing is
insulting to all people in the medical field and shows what kind of a
narrow-minded, agendad-carrying, dimwit you truly are.

Originally I composed a detailed response but for some reason it did
not post so I will just give you a 2 word synopse - XXXX off.

That generalized, flippant characterization with no proof or backing is
insulting to all people in the medical field and EXACTLY what the anti-lasik
nuts do,,,
Where was your mock indignation with them... dumbass

1 - doesn't mean you aren't greedy
2 - doesn't mean you aren't insensitive
3 - doesn't mean you aren't money hungry
4 - doesn't mean you aren't a mindless buffoon

All I know is so many people spew back and forth on these forums,
effetively causing them to degrade into nothing more then arguing that
it is hard to tell when someone is serious anymore. People with agendas
need to get lives and allow these boards to be used as they were
originally intended.

He wasn't being personal...
Just about everybody thinks they deserve what they make and more. It
amazes me that police and firemen XXXXX that they are underpaid. They
get about twice what they should. Computer people on the other hand
often get paid little more than minimum wage when they have masters
degrees and genius iqs. Musicians often can't even cover their
transportation costs with what they get paid.
Anyway.. the point is that virtually ALL people are greedy. The
starter of this thread was saying that surgeons are greedy. I would
say that surgeons are no more and no less greedy than anybody else.

One thing about being a doctor is that there are huge expenses in
paying staff, repaying college loans, insurance, equipment, etc.

What I had in mind was doctors such as Minarik. When going to see
him, don't open your mouth too wide when reading the Snellan chart or
he will steal the gold fillings out of your teeth!

I'm sure what Scott meant to say was ALL PEOPLE..

People tend to be greedy... there is at least one optometrist who was
so greedy that rather than refer his patient to a SURGEON to get IOLs
put in, that OD decided to prescribe piggyback contact lenses (2
contacts per eye) to the patient and that patient wound up committing
suicide.

That is very true.
I try to keep on topic by pointing out what idiots the malcontents are
regarging their Heny Penny "sky is falling" garbage. In the process
of scolding them, sometimes unintended people get offended. One
exception to that is offending cops. There is something Hanson and I
can agree on. Cops are slugs in human form. It is incredible what
authority a lowly cop is given.
