Myopia is a genetically predisposed, environmentally induced condition.
I nlay terms, that means the only way it will be activated is if there
is a stimulus present. Our society has evolved into one that does
oodles of close work, thus those of us with the genetics for myopia are
up shit creek without the proverbial paddle. The only alternative
myopes had was corrective lenses. Now we have a procedure that can
eliminate the need for the visual crutches. Granted there are risks
involved and long-term uncertainties but the rewards seem excellent for
most of the appropriate candidates.

I find it almost reprehensible that as a society we are aware that
excessive close work causes strain that brings about myopia yet seem to
be in the infancy stage regarding prevention. Maybe big business doesn
ot want to prevent myopia because it would cut into their profit
margin. Phillip Morris (cigarettes) and any big fast food chain are
perfect examples of profit being put before the well-being of society,
the only difference being you have achoice to not smoke or eat
McDonald's. Myopia tends to occur at a young age and by the time the
few of us are aware of any form of prevention it is too late.

So now we have Lasik, PRK, and whatever other forms of correction that
gives us the option to pitch the glasses. Naturally there is going to
be fear and hesitation because these are our eyes and any screw up
could be devastating. Then people come onto this sight and get
assaulted by the naysayers, most of whom have no factual foundation to
base their arguements. So to all the spewers out ther I say this, if
you haven othing to contribute that has no basis for fact, kindly not
bother. These boards are getting too cluttered up with stories of the
Lasik apocoypse and frankly, it is getting old.

It's bad enough our society makes us myopic, and I will be the first to
publicly ask if the hipocratic oath is getting squashed under the thumb
of corparte America for the sake of the stock holders and the bottom
line. Let's not go using scare tactics without proof.
