I do extend my consolences for Mike and others with bad lasik
experiences. Its sad that some doctors cant be trusted. If someone is
considering lasik, get the opinions of at least THREE doctors in
addition to the opinions of people who already got lasik or know others
who have. Provide all revelent infomation. If theres anything you dont
know, go for another evaluation and get tested for those parameters. If
you have a high pescription, any dryness of eyes, thin cornea, big
pupils, unrelistic expectations, etc you are a poor candidate and are
at high risk of NOT being happy after lasik.

If you are in doubt or have misgivings, its better to err on NOT
getting lasik then get it and "hope" everything pans out right. Dont
get lasik just for the sake of it or to buy into the hype. Its serious
surgury and should not be done on a whim. Stop and ask yourself why you
want lasik. Type a list of the reasons, benefits and risks and inform
yourself fully. How much risk is acceptable? What are you expecting?
Will you still be happy if you lose some contrast, have difficulty
seeing at night, end up only 20/40, under/over corrected, dry eyes or
any of the above? How much do you hate glasses? Is your hate of glasses
great enough to take the lasik risk?

I am not against lasik, but I keep my stance on both sides of the
fence. Theres those who are very happy with lasik and it changed their
lives, theres those who are indifferent, they arent too happy yet didnt
have any serious complications. Then there are those with major
complications and ruined eyes, ruined lives. I understand those who
want to reduce their dependancy on glasses. I also wish I wasnt a -4.5
and could see better without glasses but then I realize the best vision
ill be getting is thru my glasses and its something I have to deal
with. I know theres a 100% chance ill get good vision with glasses and
I can change my glasses to a different pescription as my eyes change.
With lasik theres absolutely no guarantees. It may or may not go well
for me. The way I think of it, im taking a 10% chance risk that I wont
be happy with lasik in order to need glasses less often. One never
knows what youll end up after lasik and dont go saying "Nothing bad
will happen to me" because you never know if youll be the one where
things went wrong. Lasik is real surgury with real risks.

Glasses do not make my life difficult, I do see well, my good vision
just happens to be when looking thru thin pieces of plastic sitting on
my face. You could say I see with four eyes as well as some people see
with two eyes. Sure theres some inconvinences with glasses. My lenses
get smeared, smudged and dusty all the time. Some time is spent
cleaning my glasses everyday. Glasses does somewhat slow you down if
you are an athlate or active in the outdoors. If you are a low myope,
you can simply go without glasses much of the time. You low myopes(less
than -3) are so lucky you are functional without glasses and have life
easy! My brother is -1.25 and -1.5 and only wears glasses to drive. He
does hate glasses but can see quite well uncorrected and has no trouble
reading anything from distances. Yes its a little, tiny, tensy bit
blurry without glasses but he would rather live with a nominal amount
of blur than deal with glasses. Some people would be wondering why he
doesnt get lasik, well its too risky for such a low pescription and he
could end up worse! He sees no reason to fix what isnt really broken in
the first place and if hes not having trouble seeing without glasses,
why change that? I also try to talk my low myope friends out of lasik
since they have much less to gain because their vision is not bad
without glasses!
