A New Jersey woman claims she was "almost blinded" by a top celebrity
lasik doctor, just weeks after his insurer was ordered to pay out a
massive malpractice settlement to 16 of his former patients.
Dr. Joseph Dello Russo was so angry when the woman sought emergency
treatment elsewhere that he called her new doctor and threatened him,
saying he'd "be sorry" if he didn't "make" the patient return,
documents obtained by The Post reveal.
Dello Russo also fired off a rambling, venomous missive to her new
dctor, calling him a greedy liar out to "besmerch [sic] my good name,"
the ptient's medical records show.
Dello Russo, who has clinics in New Jersey and New York, touts his
laser skills on the radio.
But not everyone is a fan: Court records show a slew of lawsuits
against Dello Russo, some still pending. Last year, the doctor settled
an undisclosed amount on a Manhattan engineer whose surgery for
narsightedness left him farsighted in one eye and the vision in the
other worse.
And on Feb. 20, a New Jersey Superior Court judge ruled the laser
king's insurer, Princeton Insurance Co., must pay $15.3 million to
cover malpractice claims from 16 former patients. Another carrier had
already agreed to pay $3 million in the case.
Dello Russo's latest dust--up began six weeks later, on April 1, when
he operated on Julie Mallen Dorry, of Three Bridges, at his New Jersey
Eye Center in Bergenfield. "He said I'd be fine and ready to go to work
Monday," the still--shaken Dorry, 44, recalled. "But my eyes started
burning on the drive home, and got worse through the night."
She went back to Dello Russo the next day -- and again the next, this
time complaining of "blurry vision" and "horrible, stabbing pains in my
right eye."
On April 11, still hurting and frustrated, Dorry said she told Dello
Russo's office she wanted a second opinion, from Flemington, N.J.,
ophthalmologist Dr. Gerald Dunham.
"They went ballistic, called Dr. Dunham 'a freak,' and said, 'Don't go
to him, we're sending a car to bring you to us,' " Dorry said.
"I think they were terrified another doctor would see what Dello Russo
had done."
Dorry said she blew off an April 12 appointment with Dello Russo, and
instead went to Dunham.
"She was only a few days away from permanent visual loss -- it was
imminent," said Dunham, who performed emergency surgery that day.
Inflammation, debris and scar tissue buildup had sparked the first
stages of glaucoma, which, if left untreated, would have blinded Dorry,
he said.
Just before the surgery began, Dunham said, a "belligerent,
threatening" Dello Russo called him, insisting he send Dorry back to
him.
"He was livid -- ranting and raving that I should 'make her come back.'
I said I couldn't make her do anything," said Dunham, who recorded
notes from the call in Dorry's medical file.
Dello Russo did not respond to messages left at his offices.

| Dr. Joseph Dello Russo was a CRSQA surgeon, so all of this is really no
surpise!

| Key word there is "was".
Why are you posting a response to your own posts? Having a
conversation with yourself? That does not seem too healthy.
