This notice is posted weekly (mostly!).

WELCOME TO THE ALT.LASIK-EYES NEWSGROUP

The primary purpose of this newsgroup is to discuss issues related to
Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), however all refractive surgery
techniques such as Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser Assisted
sub-Epithelium Keratomileusis (LASEK), Conductive Keratoplasty (CK),
Phakic Intraocular Lenses (P-IOL), Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), and
others are commonly discussed.

Readers are advised that opinions expressed here may come from eye
care professionals (optometrists, ophthalmologists, opticians,
ophthalmic researchers) as well as the general public. Alt.lasik-eyes
is an unmoderated newsgroup. Any person may say what he or she
desires without significant probability of consequence, however
courtesy is encouraged.

From time to time any newsgroup will experience posters who espouse
certain viewpoints that are misleading, hoaxes, mythology, disproved
theories, and/or outright lies. If someone is desperately trying to
convince you of something or uses demeaning or abusive language, you
might be correct in assuming that person has an agenda that has little
or no relation to your individual circumstances, and that person's
views are not consistent with current science. If it sounds too good
(or too bad) to be true, it probably is.

Please refrain from replying to posters in an effort to denounce,
ridicule, embarrass or otherwise engage in non-productive discussion.
That's called "feeding the trolls" and is usually without positive
value. If you are bothered by the tone or content of a thread, don't
read it or learn how to eliminate all postings by the author. This is
called kill-filing or filtering. For more information on how to set
up filters, please see the documentation for your newsgroup reader or
go to:

When gathering information, be aware of the source and use good
judgment. Participants who provide their true identities offer the
opportunity to research their background in consideration of the
validity of their views. In all situations, do not make vital
health care decisions without being personally examined by a
knowledgeable practitioner.

Learn the truth about Glenn Hagele. He makes money by selling
referrals to so-called CRSQA "certified" surgeons. These surgeons are
among the worst in the industry.

At Hanson had the decency to use his own identity this time, rather
than one of the many aliases he have been posting under.

I do not sell refractive surgery. My income and our nonprofit
organization's funding is not based upon the number of visitors to our
website, patients who are referred to a CRSQA Certified Refractive
Surgeon, or any similar quid pro quo arrangement.

I have never publicly or privately told anyone that they should have
refractive surgery, but I have told many that they probably should not
because it appeared their risk of a poor outcome was elevated.

The list of CRSQA Certified Refractive Surgeons is a veritable "who's
who" of the refractive surgery industry, including the editor of a
prestigious medical journal, several medical directors of large
research programs, professors at university hospitals, and authors of
many, many, many articles both peer-reviewed and general trade press.

Be sure you discuss the doctors who used to be on your list and who are
not there now, and why. Also explain how these doctors continued to be
on your list long after the legal and malpractice issues arose.

Then, rationalize how these doctors were not yet convicted or had their
licenses revoked or sent to prison, so you saw no need to remove them
from that list in the interim, sending unknowing prospective patients
their way.

Every three months we re-evaluate CRSQA Certified Refractive Surgeons
based (in part) upon direct input from patients. We decertify surgeons
who no longer meet our requirements. Frank, the previous poster,
expressed concern regarding a surgeon who was certified after he
received a poor outcome.

Of course, we do not capriciously decertify surgeons if we suspect a
problem. We use a deliberate process to affirm our concerns, and the
surgeon has the ability to appeal. That process takes time. In the
instance where our concerns are misplaced, taking the time necessary
to be sure we have our information correct is justifiable. In the
instance when our concerns are valid, it is always too much time.

A complaint (or even two) does not automatically determine a doctor to
be inferior. Every surgeon, even those certified by our organization,
will have unwanted outcomes. According to our Quality Standards
Advisory Committee, about 3% of refractive surgery patients will have
an unresolved complication at six months postop, with about 0.5% being
a serious complication that requires extensive maintenance or invasive
response. A CRSQA Certified Refractive Surgeon must not exceed the
norm to remain certified.

The surgeon who Frank complained about was decertified about a year
and a half before the state medical board pulled his license.

That's one doc. Now, what about the several others on CRSQA's list?

I think Frank wants to be in charge of your certification process
Glenn.

What about the other doctors, Frank? I'm not quite clear on what you
are asking. If you are talking about my description, that is a
composite of several of our doctors. If you are talking about our
re-evaluation process, all doctors are subject to the same process.
