| Not that you deserve a response, lasikinformer, but to answer those
who are confused by your misinformation I am responding.
First, actual scientific studies are almost never posted on the
internet, and when they are, they are written in a medical jargon
which only medical professionals would understand. My search on the
topic came up with 418 unique direct hits. Many of them reference
looney malcontent websites, so one can find any answer they want to
believe.
Here is reality for you. Usually 66% of the nerves are cut, sometimes
33% are cut, and in the case of a rare free cap, 100% are cut. The
amount of nerve tissue involved would fit on the head of a pin.
Cutting these nerves has the typical effect of dryness in the eyes for
3 to 6 months following lasik which is easily relieved with eye drops,
and if you don't mind a bit of discomfort, you don't need eyedrops at
all. I can guarantee you that the discomfort of dryness is trivial
compared to hte discomfort which periodically occurs with contact
lenses. After 6 months (in LASIK), the nerves regenerate to a point
where the tear function is once again normal. With PRK, that
typically takes a full year.
I doubt very much that the nerves fully regenerate. So what? The
ablated corneal tissue, which amounts to an amount of matter equal to
that of two or three bits of paper made by a hole punch for a
clipboard, never regenerate. That is why the lasik procedure works
and is permanent!
