| Celebrity Eye Doctor Jailed For Tax Evasion
The eye doctor who performed Lasik surgery on pop siblings Jessica and
Ashlee Simpson in on his way to prison for tax evasion.
Dr. Glenn Kawesch has been accused of shortchanging the IRS out of $4
million in taxes.
According to the TV news show Celebrity Justice, the doctor allegedly
used some of the money to buy himself a private jet.
Kawesch, who appeared on Jessica Simpson's The Newlyweds reality TV
show, has been sentenced to five months.
It has been a bad 12 months for the eye doctor - California's state
medical board revoked his license last summer, due to dishonest
business practices.

| I guess that this affirms that we were correct to decertify Dr.
Kawesch about two years ago, a year and a half before the California
Medical Board acted against him, and two years before his
incarceration on charges that do not relate to the practice of
medicine.

| Yes, we can all be thankful that CRSQA is not subject to the budget
woes of California and can take much-needed action a little bit
quicker. My surgery was nearly six years ago and the Optometry Board
still has my case in limbo.

| Well, at least you admit that when a problem does arise, the public
can count on CRSQA to act more quickly than the licensing board.
Thanks.

| Kawesch got involved in tax shelters that were blatantly illegal.
Once he was busted, he volunteered to "wear a wire" and helped the
Department of Justice obtain indictments on much bigger "fish" than
himself. He still got time.
I'm not posting here to say he's a great doctor, but I am posting to
say that his indictment and loss of license was about tax fraud...not
ophthalmology.

| Glenn, I had to rag on you severely to address the Kawesch issue, if
you remember. You hemmed and hawed about this guy.
DME, I believe in the old Chinese stinking fish theory, that if one
fish stinks, the whole pot stinks. If a person is unethical in one
area, he/she is most likely unethical in others. This is even more
important in medicine, obviously. Kawesch violated the tax laws...and
he violated other laws and ethical standards every day. Would you want
this person treating you, knowing what you now know about him? So it IS
about opthalmology, IMO.

| I don't disagree, Frank. While we are gathering information in a
situation like his I must be very, very careful about what I say
outside the organization. That is always going to look like waffling,
no matter what we are doing behind the scenes. I apologize that I
could not have been more candid.

| Have you ever heard of guilt by association?
Glenn, your org is not the AMA. It is an optional professional
organization not affiliated in any way with
education/licensing//enforcement/practice of medicine. You should have
dropped him like a hot turd when the allegations came out. If there are
that many people saying the same thing, then, well, you get my drift.
Don't come back at me with the "unproven allegations" stuff
You get a case like this again, Glenn, and I hope you exercise a lot
less due diligence. Associating with an admitted and convicted criminal
like Dr. Kawesch sullies your org's name and rep. You have much more to
lose than to gain.
Oh, and since Dr. K turned into a narc, there's a special place and
treatment for him in our correctional system. The next time he farts,
it will sound like a sigh.

| There is no way we are going to look good in a situation like what
occurred with Dr. Kawesch. Even though we did act a year and a half
before the medical board, even though the doctor is still certified by
the American Board of Ophthalmology, even though....
We did what we should have done in such a situation. We always could
have (should have) acted more quickly, but due process is often too
slow. Being better than others does not make us perfect, but it does
make us better than others.
I agree that a surgeon who was certified by us crashing and burning
does not do us any good, but do keep in mind that his certification
was ended, even if it may have been best for it to end earlier.
