There are two little federal agencies called the Food and Drug
Administration and the Federal Trade Commission who have the
responsibility and authority to respond to refractive surgery
advertisements that are inappropriate. Anyone who takes exception to
a LASIK ad needs to contact these agencies.

CRSQA does not have the authority to sanction any doctor who
misbehaves with his or her advertising, but we do have an incentive
for those who don't. We have grant money available for CRSQA
Certified Refractive Surgeons who both include a mention that they are
certified AND meet the ethical advertising guidelines of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and
Refractive Surgeons. We can't be much of a stick in this regard, but
we do offer a bit of carrot to certified surgeons.
