Patients 'not told of risks in laser eye surgery'
CLINICS offering laser eye surgery are not always informing prospective
patients about the risks, a report claimed today.
Which? magazine, using researchers posing as short-sighted patients
phoning centres for advice, said some only told half the story or gave
inaccurate guidance.
But the clinics involved said patients were always given in-depth
consultations before laser treatment to correct their vision and their
clients were pleased with the results.
There is some dispute over the possible risks involved in Lasik - the
most widely used form of laser eye surgery.
Side-effects
The researchers called 14 clinics around England and Scotland. Which?
claimed it was given conflicting information by the Rosen Eye Clinic in
Manchester about what range of vision they were able to treat, while
staff at a London clinic told the researcher there were no side-effects
apart from a little discomfort on the day, which is not necessarily the
case.
Emanuel Rosen, consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Rosen Eye Clinic,
said they had been unable to identify the member of staff who
apparently gave the advice to the researcher.
"When patients come to our clinic they are fully assessed in a very
thorough manner using all modern technology," he said.
"Our track record in refractive surgery is an excellent one and we are
determined that patients should make a sensible and informed choice
bearing in mind that some procedures are suitable for some eyes and
patients and others are not."

| There is a big difference between just initially phoning a center than
going for an exam.
What do you expect Wizzer? Are you really this stupid?

At the very least, it sounds as though they are committing fraud just
to get patients in the door.

| Only to the fraud Sandy Keller. Who had nine surgeries and sees 20/20.
What do expect anyone to do over the phone?
