Like if you are prescribe glasses but you do not wear them and cannot see
well without them, do studies support that eyes will get worse?

| No. Not wearing corrective lenses only makes you see poorly, but does
not "hurt" your ability to see (after you are an adult).
There are some theories that not wearing glasses may force the natural
lens to focus in the desired range, but I don't know of any theories
or techniques regarding undercorrection of refractive error that have
withstood scientific scrutiny.

| If you strain and squint you may. Youll also get headaches. However if
your nearsighted, you DONT want to wear glasses for close work or that
will worsen your eyes. Glasses are fine for distance seeing

What makes you think far sighted glasses for reading would worsen your
eyes?

Ace doesn't know what he's talking about. This is a person who refuses
to follow his optometrist's advice and wears several different glasses
with different Rx's that under correct his prescription. He also
believes he's presbyotic at age 23. If you told him the world was
square, he'd repeat it to someone else until someone told him the world
was round and then he'd agree with that.
People who are nearsighted see near really well and may not need to wear
glasses to do close work like reading but need corrective lenses to see
far. Farsighted people see far really well but need correction for close
work.

| There are two ways to describe myopia (nearsighted, shortsighted)
vision. One is that you cannot see things far away very well. The
other is that you can see things close very well.
Presbyopia is when the natural lens of the eye is unable to change to
focus on near objects. Presbyopia is when you need to use reading
glasses or bifocals. Presbyopia and normally shows its effects in
healthy eyes after age 40.
The relative advantage of being slightly nearsighted is that if you
are also presbyopic, you need only remove your glasses for distance
correction and use your myopia (see things close very well) vision.
For this reason, some who are presbyopic elect to have one eye myopic
and the other eye fully corrected. See
http://www.usaeyes.org/faq/subjects/monovision.htm for details.

| Hi. I am myopia and i use glasses to see far, but i also wear the glasses
while i am reading because the vision is not blurred for reading while i
Have the glasses on.
This is a bad thing?

| It sounds like you are under age 40 and have good accommodation -
ability to change focus for items near.
I'm glad to help you out with your research, but much of what concerns
you can be better answered by an examining doctor. Most LASIK clinics
will provide a basic exam for free. That exam will answer some of your
questions, provide you better information to relate to us who wish to
help you, and will undoubtedly raise more detailed questions.
I'm not suggesting that you have (or not have) surgery, but get an
exam to see if Lasik is even a reasonable possibility for you.

| If your a high myope or have significent astigmastim then I dont blame
you for using glasses for reading(however, DO hold reading material
half meter away) If you can see well enough to read without glasses
from a comfortable distance, its a good idea to do so. I undercorrect
myself with glasses so I can resolve my pseudomyopia and not strain my
eyes. Also makes reading and using the computer much clearer. Sometimes
I take my glasses off to read but because im a moderate myope, I have
to read from nearly a foot away.
whats your pescription?

| You are right. I gave Ace the benefit of the doubt.. and that came
back to kick me in the hiney. He's like a parrot that repeats what
it hears.
btw.. way off topic here.. but the portrayal in movies and on T.V. of
parrots repeating words they hear is nonsense. They need to hear the
same word or phrase thousands of times before they pick it up.
Certainly one time won't do it. The only exceptions to that might be
an African Gray parrot and Mynah bird. And the males are superior
talkers to the females. Just some birdy advice for anybody buying a
talking bird for Christmas. Oh... and although Mynah birds are
probably the best talkers (they are not a parrot), they are extremely
messy. And if you hate someone.. but them conures. They are about
twice the size of a parakeet but have an annoying very LOUD call
similar to a siren.

| update: I think you mentioned in another forum your -2.5, this means
you can see perfect from 16 inches. Thats normal reading distance and
if you read for more than a minute, do take your glasses off or your
eyes will just get worse like they did. I dont know if you can see the
computer monitor clear enough without glasses, but if you can, dont use
glasses for the computer either! Too bad im a -4.5 this is only 9
inches clear! I still usually read without glasses as I dont want
stair-case myopia plus I have some presbyopia so I see best from near
with no glasses. For the computer I use weaker glasses

how do you figure out what the 20/whatever distance is from the -2.5
and how did you figure 16 inches?
| |
|
| You can try the 16 inch thing yourself. A 1 diopter lense is in focus
at 1 meter. Your eyes are like a 2.5 diopter lense so they are in focus
at 2/5 meters which is 16 inches. My -4.5 diopter eyes are 2/9 of a
meter which is 9 inches. If you can not see clearly from 16 inches then
your worse than -2.5 and you can test this also by tilting your
glasses. If theres any perceptable difference you may be a -3 or worse!
How well do you see with glasses? If your seeing 20/15 to 20/20 youll
be 20/100 without them. (I know several people seeing 20/100 at -2.5,
one lady in particular and on a good day she can barely make out 20/80.
Shes 20/15 with -2.5 lenses)If its better than 20/15 with glasses,
youll see 20/70 uncorrected! (I know one guy who does see 20/70
uncorrected and between 20/10 and 20/15 with -2.5 glasses) For
reference, I see 20/30 with glasses(best corrected) and can see 20/150
with a -2.5 undercorrection. My -4.5 diopters is easily 3x worse than
being -2.5
When you use the computer, youll be able to see the keyboard without
glasses, I most certainly cant! Youll be able to read text on the
monitor without glasses, I cant! Youll be able to see the alarm or
digital clock when you wake, I usually cant without squinting. Youll be
able to read the close captions on the TV, I cant unless I move very
close! Trees are just green blobs to me while youll be able to make out
some leaves and larger branches. Youll be able to see your toes in the
shower while I barely can. Youll be able to see your friends faces as
you have fun swimming, I cant unless I swim up to him. I wish I was
less myopic, thered be alot more I could do without glasses. But then I
talked to a lady who was -10.5 with a bit of astigmastim and she says
"you have it bad? I have it MUCH worse without glasses!" I cant even
see a thing more than 2 feet away from me, its just a jangle of colors!
I cant even see my dog or tell my dog from my chair! I cant properly
judge distance and sometimes bump into walls and doors! My nose has to
be literally touching the book in order to see it clearly! I can do
nothing without glasses and if I lose or break them, I am as good as
blind and need someone to guide me as I walk or ill get lost or bump
into things! You on the other hand being -4.5 can at least walk without
assisance and can see well enough to read without your nose in the
book. You can still see large objects like chairs without glasses. Shes
right, but then I am right when comparing myself to your -2.5!
Basically myopes envy those with less myopia than themselves!
