LME has completely dumbed down to SE level.
Youv'e got to read the latest crap on that BB. Not only do we have the
usual cast of whiners such as Phyllis Knapp, Kevin(Chip),Scientist even
the head cheese Rebecca. We now have Casey, the new Broken Eyes of LME
who think Lasik causes everything from acne to global warming. All they
need over there is a comic strip. Oh, incidentally, Phyllis's eyes
hurt, she has to post every ache and pain she ever had in her life in
every post. I really feel for her husband, if I were him I'd be on hard
drugs.
Rebecca, you've got a real funny website there with all those pro
whiners. C'mon, those people can't possibly be real. Who writes for
you? By the way, Phillis's eyes still hurt (it's been five minutes
now). You through Glenn and Minarik off your site in favor of those
nuts? You've got rocks in your head.

For those of you planning to have RS in the future don't bother with
LME, it's useless as tits on a bull when it comes to real research
material. If you want a good laugh, read LME, it's hysterical.

Yes, it does look like a LASIK hate fest over there, but I would say
the exception may be Rebecca herself.

A recent response from Rebecca to a person considering LASIK in
Ireland was full of caution, but also what seemed like solid advice on
how to proceed if the candidate is going to proceed. I don't know if
I would have responded much differently.

A lone voice of reason amongst the cacophony of hysteria may still
give a poor overall opinion of the bulletin board, but Rebecca
controls who is and who is not on that board. If she wants it to have
a different personality, then she has the ability to do so.

My impression is that the LME BB was an afterthought, and Rebecca considers
LME much more than just an appendage of the BB.

Also, I think that it would be useful to remember that Rebecca herself is a
victim of an unscrupulous refractive surgery. She has been exceedingly
productive considering her visual limitations. I have no qualms with
patients like her using the internet to vent their opinions. Intelligent
people can easily judge their relative value, biased, somewhat biased,
unbiased...although RT would say that there is no such thing as 'unbiased.'

Glenn,

When Rebecca allows only the lunatic fringe to post total bullshit on
her site without any rebuttal, she becomes the same as the rest of
them.
By the way, Phillys's eyes still hurt, along with everything else.

Unless you live in their shoes, don't underestimate the impact of imperfect
vision can cause someone. I don't know your case, and maybe you don't have
perfect post lasik vision, or have had lasik at all, but I do agree, you
MUST stop whining about it at some point and move on, but you must not
underestimate it's emotional impact. If you have had lasik, and a good or
ok outcome, go get some +2 readers, and just wear them all day long. Or
better yet, get +2 in one eye, and +1.25 in the other, but make one of them
a -1.00 cyl and wear them day and night for just 2 or 3 days. It's
maddening. Sure it was elective surgery, but nobody elected to get screwed
up. Wear them glasses, and come back and post.

Then come back and tell me they are bitching.

Attacking people in this viable, legal industry is one thing (such as what
happens to Dr. G, or Dr. Wallace, or Glenn, etc.), but pretending to walk in
their shoes is another.

I came off the table with 20/25 UCVA and 20/30 UCVA, normally a successful
surgery at a +4.75. However, my BCVA is 20/22 in one eye, and 20/15 in the
other, and I have slight lazy eye, a contradiction, and my good eye is my
worse eye now. When you are cross-eyed, even slightly, you have monocular
vision. i.e., baseball isn't your game once you get past the coach tossing
the ball to you. One eye does all the work, and the other one just sort
helps out on the peripheral side of the house.

So you know what I did. I went and found a OD who would write an RX to make
my left eye <dominant eye> 20/22 BCVA, and I have a clear lense in the other
side which leaves me with 20/22 - 20/25 vision. 20/22 means to me I don't
get the M's versus the N's, or the Q's versues the O's. Still have minor
shadowing at night. However, the headaches went away, and I have a +1.25
add for reading on the dominant side. Still have fuzziness due to irregular
ast. But I can function. If I would let them tell me what script to use,
I'd have 20/15 in my non dominant eye, and 20/22 in the other. There is a
big difference.

I will wait until they get this down. Alcon will be able to fix me in a
year or two. Or I'll find a local OD who will fit me, given my schedule
with an RGP.

But, I'm off to #%#$@ Iraq in 6 days.

See you guys in a bit.

So in this topic we've seen the gamut of what laser eye surgery can
cause. There's people who are thrilled with their surgery and can't
understand why anyone could NOT want LASIK. Then there are people in
constant pain because of LASIK. Some want to believe they must be
lying because they don't have empathy for anyone for any reason.

I agree with Simpledog that whining in non-productive. I'm dealing
with a shitty LASIK outcome the best I can. On bright, sunny days I no
longer need glasses, thanks to LASIK. But come sundown, I can't see
anything without accompanying starbursts, halos, ghosts and faint
double vision, also thanks to LASIK. How do you move on from that?

Before LASIK my joy was ultra-distance running. That is running
distances from 50 to 100 miles. For all but the best runners, the only
way to run 100 miles is to run all night. Spending all night alone on
a Rocky Mountain trail with a full moon to see by was always a magical
event. After LASIK that died. Only last year was I able to run
another 100 mile race, the Javelina Jundred Mile Run in a desert park
east of Phoenix. I finished nearly dead last in 29.5 hours. It was only
possible because of RGP contacts. So from now on, that's my coping
method: Run til sundown then put in the contacts and pray I don't
lose one while clambering up a rocky slope. Next race: the Umstead
100 mile trail race in Unstead State Park, Raleigh on April 2nd.
Fellow whiners are welcome to join me.

It's good to hear that RGPs restore at least some of your night
vision. Two additional alternatives to investigate are eye drops to
reduce the size of your pupil, such as Alphagan P, and Complex
Wavefront Retreatment (CWR) surgery to correct the undercorrected
periphery of your cornea.

For those who don't understand why this person has poor night vision
after LASIK and want to avoid it themselves, visit

Brimonidine (the drug name of Alphagan) has been shown in published
medical literature to cause taxyphylaxis - that is, daily use of it
reduces its ability to constrict the pupils or may even make the pupils
larger.

It can be, and certainly is, a useful tool for some people especially
if they use it less than daily and do not have undesireable other side
effects from it.

crvc@wyoming.com

2004-12-30, 7:11 pm

A small number of people will have problems if they use Alphagan. When
I tried it, it caused a yellow/gray tint over everything, similar to
wearing yellow-tinted glasses. For me a better drug was diluted
pilocarpine. I use 1/8th percent if I need to drive home in the dark
and don't want to spend time putting the lenses in.

Thanks for the clarification Glenn. I responded because your posting

But, like a hemorrhoid, I take reminding people that they are being an

clicking on the "post" button, then I wouldn't mind being a pain in the
