My understanding is that the Alcon Custom Cornea and Visx CustomVue
machines both perform "wavefront" lasik. Can anyone point me to the
right direction regarding statistics for both machines, specifically
those patients who experience 20/20 after first use versus those that
need enhancements.

I can't give you any statistics, but I can say that I personally know 5
people who had LASIK with the Visx Customvue machine in August
*including myself* that have had perfect 20/20 with no problems at all.

Also, I think it's great that you are doing research into the actual
machinery doing the job, but in my opinion, the surgeon is more
important, as both machines have an excellent track records from the
last data I saw.

I'm sure someone is going to post with some hard data on the machines
soon, but the surgeons track record is so much more important!!

Currently there are three excimer lasers that are FDA approved to
provide customized wavefront-guided ablations. Visx S4 CustomVue,
Alcon LADARVision 4000 CustomCornea, and Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217z
Zyoptix. All are approved for myopic (nearsighted) correction and
astigmatism (irregular cornea shape). The Visx S4 is also approved
for hyperopic correction.

The WaveLight Allegretto uses a wavefront optimized ablation pattern,
however it is not customized to each patient.

The FDA clinical trials will provide outcomes information. Visit
http://www.usaeyes.org/faq/devices.htm for more technical details on
these lasers plus links to the relevant FDA data.
