| My doctor is suggesting surgery on the scarred corneas of my eyes. I'm totally
new in this area, so some suggestions would be appreciated.
I've been told for over 30 years, whenever I had an exam for glasses, that I
have scarring on both corneas from dry eyes. I have mild glaucoma (pressure
18 each eye,1 drop Timolol each eye once a day) and Type 2 diabetes, under
fairly good control.
Age 76.
At the moment my vision is terrible! Blurry much of the time and it clears up
somewhat undependably. I use drops and gels, OTC but the kind advised by my
MD. Sometimes the eyes hurt and often feel as though there was something
brushing the eyeball.
I can't do anything until after April, so I have time to learn the
possibilities.

Is he suggesting a corneal transplant?

Gosh, I hope the doctor is not proposing a corneal transplant yet.
Mitomycin C has been used successfully to resolve issues of corneal
scaring. Perhaps this should be discussed with your doctor.

| Best of my knowledge (he's going to see me after April 15) he's going to sort
of polish off the surface.
I told you I need to find out what questions I need to ask - and there's #1.

OK. Well that's a whole lot less invasive than a transplant.
Is he going to use a laser or a diamond coated tool, i.e do a PTK or a
diamond keratectomy?

| I believe he said laser. Now there's another bunch of questions for him.
Incidentally, I'm going to check with another doctor in early January and I'll
have printed all your questions so I can get answers - and then make a final
decision.
Having had diabetes for over 14 years, I NEVER take a doctors word as chiseled
in stone. Admire and respect them, including mine, but it's MY body, and MY
eyesight and I make the decisions - after getting all the help and information
I can.

Well, now that you mentioned diabetes again, I am wondering if your doctor
is proposing laser surgery on your RETINAS instead of your corneas to treat
diabetic retinopathy. Do you think?
DrG

| Laser surgery for diabetic retinopathy makes much more sense, and
would help explain the poor vision quality. If the doctor mentions
Argon laser, then it is probably laser surgery for your retinas.

| No. I get checked for diabetic retinopathy and pressure every 6 months. Have
for years.
The corneal scarring has been mentiioned by every oculist I've seen in the
last 40 years so that's certain.
