The regulation granting optometrists surgical benefits, which was
approved by the Oklahoma Board of Examiners in Optometry last month,
received the governor’s signature on Oct. 29, according to news
sources.

Oklahoma is now the only state in the nation that allows health
practitioners who are not medical or osteopathic doctors to perform
scalpel eye surgery.

Expect the ophthalmologists to pull out all the stops.

What, are they going to drop the MOAB on OK?

But would anyone notice? Just kidding Oklahomans. 8^)

The recent exclusion of optometrists from conventions of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology and restrictions on ODs at the American
Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons are a direct result of
this legislation. I expect these groups to use their vast resources
to inundate the Oklahoma legislature with lobbying efforts and mount a
public relations campaign to turn OK citizens against optometrists
doing surgery. In the 20+ years I've been involved in healthcare,
I've never seen two groups more angry at each other.

Scalpel eye surgery? Like what? My understanding is that while they
are legally allowed to perform PRK and intralase LASIK, they can't use
any blade. And also, I don't think they actually do surgeries in OK
even though they can legally. There is too much expense, supervision,
and red-tape involved.
