Author Clarification about what Dr Trattler said about the incidence of ectasia

Ever since a recent post by Dr Trattler, there has been an
oft-repeated refrain in this forum stating that he described the rate
of ectasia as 2 in 3000 (0.06%).

This is not consistent with my reading of Dr Trattler's post, which is
as follows:

"The real point is that there is a tiny subset of patients who have
an underlying condition that is pre-Forme-Fruste keratoconus. That
means - that over time, they will develop signs of Forme-Fruste
Keratoconus - but at the time of their evaluation - their topographies
and Orbscans are normal...if you follow that... eye over
time, it will eventually develop signs of Forme-Fruste keratoconus. As
well, if you were to perform LASIK on these eyes, both eyes would end
up with ectasia.

Clearly - this is a tiny subset of the population. Although we
had 2 such cases in the first 3000 cases at our center, I know that
other centers have had a much lower rate.

Of course - the vast majority of ectasia cases that I have seen
are related to poor patient selection."

The 2 in 3,000 cases cited by Dr Trattler (and acknowledged to be a
higher rate than other clinics he knows of) are specificially
described as cases where LASIK was done on an undetectable pre-FFKC
cornea - and Dr Trattler clearly states that he believes such cases to
be a small minority of all ectasia cases, which in the main are to be
blamed on poor screening.

I am not trying to say what the approximate incidence of ectasia is or
isn't, because I do not know. I just want to clear up what may be an
inadvertent mischaracterisation of Dr Trattler's post. He did not say
ectasia occurs in 0.06% of patients, at least not in that post.

If it is not the 2 cases in 3,000, I also would like to know Dr.
Trattler's incidence of ectasia. Since it would probably be a small
number, the patients' current condition and prognosis would be
interesting as well. It would be nice to have the actual results from
a respected surgeon publicly available.
