Sandy , what's the point?
Once in a while I want to smoke a fine Cuban cigar being accompanied by a
single malt whisky.
I am aware and well informed of the fact, the changes of getting problems
are great besides the pleasures of these habits.
Being informed I should say it is my own choice and others have to decide
for themselves.
Good information about the possible risks is perfect, how people
react/decide on the warnings however is meaningless information.

I don't understand why this is "meaningless information". A LASIK
proponent can crow about a good result so why can't I be happy to read
that someone has resisted the pro-LASIK hype? The odds of a poor
outcome are low but that is "meaningless" if you're the one with the
poor outcome. Before LASIK I could drive after dark. After LASIK I
couldn't. Just driving home from work was so dangerous I ended up
selling my home becase I needed to live within walking distance of
work.
The LASIK industry may consider HOAs trivial because the incidence is
low, but it happens to someone somewhere whenever LASIK is performed.

| Glenn - USAEyes.org 2004-10-29, 7:16 pm |
| Chip,
I don't think anyone wants to trivialize your difficulties, or the
troubles anyone with a poor outcome endures. I think the
counter-point to Keller's gloating is that there was nothing in her
post that indicated the person would have had a poor outcome or was
even at an elevated risk.
Although when cornered she will capitulate a bit, by and large Keller
has made it clear that if she had her way no one would have LASIK. For
the millions who are delighted with their result, that would be a
disservice.
The good outcome of one person does not necessarily indicate another
will have the same good outcome. Equally, the bad outcome of one
person does not necessarily mean another person will have a bad
outcome. Every individual is different and each needs to be evaluated
individually.
The probability of what happened to Keller happening to someone today
is just about nil. I submit that Keller's experience of years ago is
not relevant to someone considering refractive surgery today. Perhaps
bits and pieces might be relevant for a few people, but most certainly
not the whole and absolutely not for everyone.
If the often expressed real concerns about refractive surgery makes
someone investigate carefully and come to the conclusion that
refractive surgery is too risky due to their individual circumstances
and for their personal level of comfort, then it seems to me that the
person is well served. If that same person is scared off because of
horror stories or jumps in because of hype, that person is not very
well served at all.

| There is something very odd about this message. The woman says she
wears glasses and is going to stick with them. It seems to me that
someone would try out contact lenses before having LASIK done. Why
isn't this woman wearing contacts?
Anyway, I hope the lady enjoys wearing a pair of goggles for the rest
of her life. I hated my glasses. Since she isn't even doing
contacts, she must love her glasses.

I tried contacts 20 years ago and couldn't stand them. That once was enough
for me. Maybe others tolerate them better or are modern contacts easier to
handle?
Either way Rags surely people that wear contacts don't really enjoy wearing
them do they?

I wore contacts for 20 years before having LASIK. I was having no
problem with them but I didn't want to wear them anymore so I opted to
have LASIK. I do a lot of traveling to remote places in Asia for
several months at a time. Contact lens solution is not locally
available. Lugging bottles of solution was a burden, not to mention
even sometimes finding clean water to wash my hands. But it was
do-able. In this type of scenario, glasses are easier than contacts and
I could have worn them, but a successfully LASIKed eye is even easier.
It's perfectly reasonable for someone to have LASIK even if they have no
problems with glasses or contacts.

| Modern contacts are easier to handle, although they are still an
annoyance. I would be hesitant about recommending LASIK to someone
who preferred glasses over contact lenses.
Way back in the stone ages, contact lenses were made of glass.
As weith Lasik vs H-Lasik, there is a huge difference between myopic
glasses worn at all waking hours and hyperopic glasses worn only for
reading or occasional use. Glasses are no fun when you have to wear
them for extended periods of time.

| What I was getting at is how fishy that story of the glasses lady
sounded. Considering the source of that story, I am highly scepticle
of it.

I would like to empasize one aspect of your reply. 97% of people are
happy...
I promise you that if 100 people were given the identical meal
prepared by the world's greatest chef that far less than 97 of them
would be happy with the meal. 97% happiness in ANYTHING is
remarkable. I bet that fewer than 97% of lottery winners are happy
about winning. Suddenly everyone wants their money, they don't know
what to do with their money, family want them dead to collect
inheritance, etc.
