| The equipment and technology that is most likely to provide the result
you desire will depend upon your individual circumstances.
We recommend two avenues to select a refractive surgeon. Our
organization has evaluated and certified a select group of doctors.
You can look up the LA area doctors at
http://www.usaeyes.org/surgeons/locate.htm
We have also developed a list of 50 Tough Questions For Your Doctor to
be used with any uncertified surgeon. They are located at
http://www.usaeyes.org/faq/tough_questions.htm

I'm still undecided about refractive surgery for myself. Ophthalmologist
friends have recommended Dr. James Salz as the best refractive surgeon in the
Los Angeles area. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials. However, I
can't find his name on the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance
list. Which always makes me wonder about Glen's list and if it really lists
the most qualified surgeons or simply those most interested in marketing their
services.

| There are many reasons why good doctors may not seek our certification
and one of those reasons is politics.
There are several LA surgeons who have been or are currently
participating in clinical trials, have been published in peer-reviewed
journals, have been directors of major university clinics, AND are
certified by our organization. I would never say one should EXclude
Dr. Salz, but one most certainly should INclude one or more of the
local CRSQA Certified Refractive Surgeons for consideration.

He can't certify a surgeon that hasn't submitted to his review to be
certified. Actually, I'm not sure how that is possible. In Florida,
if not the entire country, there are new laws that prohibit doctors
from sharing records. I'm not sure how far those laws go though.
One part of the new laws requires eye doctors to give the patient
their prescription for glasses or contacts even if the patient doesn't
ask for it. In the years I wore contact lenses, not one doctor would
give me my prescription, even when I demanded it. They would tell me
to have the dispenser of the contacts or glassed contact them and they
would tell them the Rx. These days, with an Rx in hand, anybody can
easily go on the internet and find rock bottom prices on contact
lenses. That's fine for simple soft contacts, but not for glasses or
RGPs.

I would agree with the recommendations of Dr. Salz. I found him to be
the only surgeon in California who gave me an honest assessment of
what had gone wrong with my LASIK, and the only one courageousness and
ethical enough to be willing to stand up in court and say so. His
staff is exceptionally compassionate and if I ever get desperate
enough to try to get help for my right eye, I will ask Dr. Salz first.
Dr. Salz doesn't need CRSQA certification. He has patient
certification, which cannot be bought.
