MAYBE I'M ONE IN A MILLION
|

| I was first diagnosed with Lupus in 1993. I was living in Adelaide,
South Australia, at the time and the weather down here can get quite
cold. I have Sjorgrens, discoid as well as the usual constant fatigue
and the good old pains in all joints. I have lost the sight in my left
eye (also put down to Lupus.
In 2001, I was offerred a very good Nursing position in Alice Springs
(Central Australia) where HOT means about 59 degrees in the sun. I had
all the usual symptoms still but worked on nonetheless.
I have now moved back to Adelaide and when the weather started to get
cold again we both decided to head north, towards the sun. We travelled
3000 kms to Darwin (the top end of Australia) and enjoyed just being
warm and being able to swim etc.
Now the funny thing is, while I was up there for 4 weeks my Lupus,
apart from the usual symptoms, did not seem too bad. I have now
returned to Adelaide where the skies are grey and the air is cold and
my Lupus has just flared up so badly all I want to do is stay in bed.
Every movement brings pain, I'm covered in discoid rashes and all I
want to do is sleep.
What makes me so different from everybody else I speak to? They all get
a very bad Flare Up when sun exposed! I guess I am an anonomaly!

| Hi Diane,
The sun can have a delayed reaction in timing when it affects your lupus =
and sets off a flare; so your symptoms can still be attributed to the =
sun and/or even the swimming if you are not a really active person =
unless on holidays. As well it is well documented that travel time is =
very stressful to the body, so can easily be a trigger for anyone's =
lupus flares.
I am sorry you are having a rough time with the weather changes too... =
and yes, changes in the weather also can trigger your lupus symptoms!
Good luck with feeling better... HTH and it is JMO.....
hugs,
Shelagh

| Maybe I'm a fall or spring lupie. I don't do well in the hot, humid summers
(and I have no idea about dry summers). Put me out there in that extreme
heat and I can get pretty sick. OTOH, I can't handle the bitter cold either
as every joint kills me if it gets cold. I think we all need to find what
works for us. I'm thinking I'd like to find an island in the Gulf Stream.
