As some of you already know, I have been battling with tinnitus also. Will
plaquenil make that worse. Sorry for the panic state I'm in but sounds like
I'm going to have to make choices I don't want to make. At least I finally
made an appointment for a different eye doctor on the 11th which is better
than in June.

Hugs to all,
Paulette

Paulette, herer is the info from the retinal spec. report to my docs:

Normal dosage for chor now is --
(as quoted from the letter from the retinal specialist who works with =
the researchers and rheumy docs who deal with autoimmune patients) :
"the current thinking is that chloroquin should not exceed
3.5mg/kg/day on a lean body weight basis"....

That is from the specialist's letter to my docs, as he sent me a copy as =
well.... you should perhaps show your new doc the new numbers? He also =
stated that:

"I had been receiving 3.8mg/kg/day of chloroquin which on a lean body =
weight basis was 5.3mg/kg/day"

.....which is why I am now toxic and have central vision loss which is =
ATPIT not reversible!
good luck and hugs to you,
Shelagh

ringing of the ears is a possible side effect when using Plaquenil (also a
possible side effect when using aspirin, naprosyn and many more) but you
won't know if the Plaquenil affects you until you try it.

Plaquenil is the least toxic drug used for lupus. The other drugs are much
more toxic so I'd really consider the Plaquenil since it literally works
miracles for some.
You can always stop it (keep in mind you need several months to give it a
chance)
200mgs twice a day seems to be the standard dosage (unless you're unusually
small or large) according to rheumatology.org

Find an ophthalmologist (make sure this is an MD not an optometrist) who
knows what Plaquenil is and what to look for.... have a baseline exam, then
every 6 months..... you'll be good to go.

I was hesitant to start it too... then another rheumy explained it to me and
I decided to use it. Plaquenil has been around since the 40s so there's a
lot known about it.
take care
