The upshot of it is that a particular protein is more likely to be
damaged in lupus sufferers. Because it's damaged it looks foreign to
the immune system and so antibodies are raised against it. The problem
is that the antibodies may also recognise the normal version of the
protein, because it's so similar.

The experiment involved injecting the damaged protein into rabbits.
When the antibodies were tested they also tended to attack the normal
undamaged protein.
