Author Prayers for New Orleans
Mermaid

2005-09-24, 2:36 pm

I want to send a prayer for the people of New Orleans and surrounding areas.
I feel so bad for them. I live in constant fear of the same thing happening
to my daughter in Charleston, SC. She lives on an island. The weather on our
world has gotten unbelievable.

Hope everyone here is safe.

Much love and hugs,
Paulette

I've got a friend down there and she left early Monday morning. She lives
sort of northeast of New Orleans so who knows what she'll be going back to
when this is over. I was glued to news feed out of N.O. until almost
midnight here last night when the news station must have lost power. It was
awesome to watch what was happening. That was such a massive storm - just
incredible.

Yes, I know what you mean about waiting for another one to hit. Isabel
ripped through here (SE Virginia) last year and did all kinds of damage (we
lost our car to it) and that was just a cat one storm. Heck, I know what
"just" the remnants of a good storm can do. But I'd rather cope with a
hurricane than a tornado, an earthquake, tsunami, or volcano. At least we
have plenty of warning and can make preparations. I don't think it matters
where anyone lives as we will always be at Nature's mercy.

Just tell your daughter to heed any warning for evacuation. Keep important
papers together and ready to transport (including photo albums). The rest is
just "stuff" and it is replaceable! People are not replaceable!

So true Bev we are all at Mother Natures mercy. And all you can do is
pay attention and be prepared. We went through Tropical Storm Allison
(just to name one as we had been through 3 others in '89 when my
daughter was born flooded 3 times by time she was 3 months old) but
Allison was really bad came through Houston twice second time dumping 27
inches rain. We had a foot of water in our old place. And we were ready
well as ready as you can be. But it is still deviating and when you
see your car floating in the drive way and even though you have put up
the important stuff you can't put up everything, the days after are
smelly and disheartening. And where some insurance co. will come
through, others will do anything not to pay you. Our wind policy paid
better than our flood in comparison to each other. And don't think FIMA
is going to be a help they blow in like a big help but in the end it's a
joke not just from our experience but from most people we talked to. It
had maditorally taken over our flood because the old place had multiple
floods over a certain amount of time. Still cost same each year same
coverage supposedly, but when it came down to it, it covers a fraction
of what the regular would have paid.
So all you really can do is just what Bev said protect life and limb
and those important pic's and papers. All the rest will work out some
how. the 3 P' pet's, pic's paper's.
I am saying a thank you that it spared us on this one we were pretty
close I live about 23 miles from Galveston...

I know tons of people in NO; I lived there 25 yrs ago so I'm praying for
them too. I lived in Orleans East on Chef Menteur Hwy, which seems to be the
hardest hit. Haven't heard anything about Chalmette tho, it's pretty low
lying & a big shrimping town (that's where I saw ET when it came out) &
although it's not New Orleans, still a close suburb.

Hey Paulette,

I am in Florida but spent most of my life in the Lowcountry of SC. Worked
at a newspaper there.
Was your daughter in Hugo?

What island is she on if you do not mind my asking?

Always,

No she wasn't in Hugo. That was before she came down there to go to college.
She has seen a video on what it did to Charleston. They said it took about
10 years to completely recover from that one. However it seems small
compared to what poor NO is going through. She lives on James Island. I wish
they were on the mainland but couldn't persuade them otherwise. It had to do
with distance to work. The traffic there is horrible. The town is growing
and they are not compensating the roads to take care of it. My self I could
not live every year in constant worry about the weather.

Hugs,
Paulette

Oh Paulette, I do not worry. Most of the storms are nothing to worry about.
Sometimes I think we are stand a better chance being struck by lightening at
times.

Hi Candi (and everyone else). I've been off-line since mid August and
have missed all of you. Good to see familiar names again. Sorry for
the current reply to such an old topic but I couldn't resist. I was
born and raised in New Orleans ... wonder if Candi and I were passing
each other at the local A&P. (Or was it Piggly Wiggly? K&B (Drugs)?
Winn Dixie?)

In the 50s and 60s I lived in the area between City Park/Bayou St. John
and the London Avenue canal. The house where I lived in this area was
under about 11 feet of water. (I saw the street name on one of those
videos showing a boat with only street signs and roofs visible.) In
the late 60s we moved to New Orleans East near Chef Menteur Highway and
Read Blvd. (Hi, Candi!) The house in this area got about 7 feet of
water. In 1974 I left for college and returned only to visit after
that. My parents followed me to the mid-Atlantic area 10 years ago.
(And are they - and us - ever glad!!)

We have some contact with distant family and friends who still
live/lived? in the area. In every case the stories are sobering. None
that I know of have returned to the city (Orleans Parish) except
perhaps to go into their house, grab a few muddied "souvenirs", then to
return to their lives-in-limbo. I ache so for those who have been
thrown a loop by this disaster.

CP glad that you were able to get back to us. It really has to be hard to
look at where you onced lived on the news and see all of the destruction to
life, familes and property.

Welcome back.

Hugs,
Sherry

I don't care where you live, there will always be a feeling about the place
where you grew up. I'm sure seeing your old neighborhood under water has
effected you.
Bev
