Author Update on Me

Hi All,
Some of you have asked for an update on Miss Mermaid. I went to my Rheumy
for the first time in about 20 years. He was glad to see me. He was very
patient and understanding and listened. It was refreshing to have a doctor
that did that. Anyway, as I knew he would, he ran tons of blood tests and
x-rays. He put me on an anti-depression, anti-anxiety med for at night, pain
and anti-inflammatory drug. He said my muscle tone was horrible. He is
sending me to physical therapy for which I don't know how I am going to fit
it in my daily schedule. The next day, his office called and said my chest
x-ray showed a possible enlarged heart. So off I go to have a eco-cardiogram
on the 24th. What a birthday present! Gee!

My main complaints were my sciatic nerve problem in my left leg, pain in my
left rib area and my heart PVCs and pounding. I looked up enlarged heart
causes and the thyroid problems and lack of exercise seemed to ring a bell.
Not sure why no exercise could cause an enlarged heart. But on the other
hand seems like everything I do causes my heart to jump out of my chest. Not
sure how that is going to cause my heart to go back to normal. Or once it
enlarges, can it go back?

The depression meds are helping me sleep and finally in the middle of the
night I can notice that my heart has calmed down and not pounding in my
ears.
All this is pretty unsettling. It is scary to hear your heart and waiting
for it to stop.

Thats it for me.

Any ideas?

Much Love,
Paulette Ethyl Mermaid

Sorry for the repeated updates and replys. There is something weird
going on with my computer. I may have to start responding in google
instead of my work internet base. Always something going on here. I can
see everyone but my own posts. Dang it.

Again Sorry,
Paulette

I can see you three times! LOL

I'm not sure why some things seem to affect our hearts. Maybe after you've
been on your new meds for a while you'll find your system will have calmed
down and you will be able to start to do some exercising. That should help.
Yes, I think the heart will return to normal if you don't have permanent
damage. (Just remember that is coming from the most un-medical person you
probably know. LOL)

I have been doing some research myself and I am wondering if I might have
MVP (Mitral valve prolapse). The eco-cardiogram will show it if I do.
Seems like it is not unusual with lupus patients. If I do, I am not going to
be happy with my GP. Seems like these days you have to take matters in your
own hands. I also read that having a magnesium defienciency can have
something to do with it as well as thyroid problems. Well, Well what does
that sound like. Sorry I sound cynical. But I'm at that point.

Does anyone know about MVP?

Started my walking last night. The only thing that scares me is how my heart
pounds out of my chest when I exercise. You can visbly see it.

As goes the Perils of Paulette.

Love to all,
Paulette

I have it; it's common in my family. It's usually just annoying.
I've had my heart go ballistic a few times when I've been
dehydrated, usually when I have the flu, but even then it's
always settled down after a few moments (granted, they
were intensely interesting moments). None of my relatives
have ever had a problem with it.

I don't know what the current medical opinion is on it--today is
an even-numbered day in a month without an R in it, so it's
probably regarded as a serious problem. When a doctor told
me I had it, he said that the biggest threat came from infections.
Supposedly bacterial plaques can collect on the mitral valve, so
you should take antibiotics before dental surgery. On the other
hand, I saw a news article a few years ago which said that this
doesn't happen.

Hi Paulette,
I have a MVP. It was discovered about 12 years ago, if I remember correctly.
I have always had problems with my heart pounding, extra beats and long
pauses. However, my heart was totally out of rhythm and I could feel the
pounding right through to my back at that time. The echo showed the problem.
The cardiologist said that I should take antibiotics before having any
surgical or dental procedures done. My dentist prescribes them even before I
have my teeth cleaned. My understanding is that MVP is a common thing in
lupus patients and in the general population as well.
