| Thought I'd share my favorite moments in the snow.
As a young adult I drove back home to my girlfriend's home. I'd left mine in
rain but when I crossed into Pennsylvania it had changed to sleet. By the
time I got to her house I had zero visibility and what should have taken me
only a few hours had turned into over 6 hours of driving. I parked my car
and entered the house quietly after midnight knowing the family was asleep.
Fortunately, I knew the security codes to the house. My coat was covered in
snow so I left it in the mudroom to drip dry. I was awaken in the morning by
my friend's dad who happened to spot my coat. He wanted me to find my car.
I'd left it in the driveway. It was a tiny MG Midget and he did not want
accidentally plow it. Well, I knew where I'd parked it but the snow and the
drifts had covered it completely. Slowly and carefully I made my way to the
car and found it. Then my girlfriend and I went to the horses. We rode most
of the day. Old enough to do as we pleased without parents telling us to
come in from the cold, etc. The snow had stopped and we had a blast. Over
hills and valley we raced and walked the horses through the fields for
hours. Then we took them home and bedded them in with a few extra treats. We
took out the sleds and skis and had a blast. When we came in we were starved
and it had begun to sleet. We figured we'd had about 38 inches of snow or
some such outrageous amount and then that night we got 4 inches of sleet on
top of the snow. When it stopped sleeting the sky cleared and we had a
beautiful moonlit night - everything sparkled and it looked like a winter
wonderland. We pulled out the skates and ice skated until about 4 AM when we
were so cold and so beat we could not go any further.
I know as a child I loved to play in the snow but there is not a single
memory as wonderful as that one day and night spent in the snow and ice.
Unfortunately my children never had the opportunity to ever experience such
a snow as this area of Virginia only gets a few inches if it does get snow
and it is usually very wet and vanishes in 24 hours.
Thinking back on it now I don't think one muscle hurt the next day - we were
both excellent athletes and in top shape. The sheer joy of riding the
horses, the tremendous sense of freedom, and the beauty and the quiet of the
snow and ice is forever frozen in my mind. It was a once in a lifetime
experience. I wish so many people could have such memories, I think those
living further south never have such opportunities to play in the snow.
