good morning. Quick update on the Lake Livingston/Polk area. I'm greatfull
Cindy and Kcat stayed in Houston. They were blessed. Some areas of
Livingston got power yesterday. We are one of the lucky ones in our area,
we got power yesterday about 1 pm. I feel almost guilty as people behind us
didn't. It's a weird statement I know. But that is how I feel. In town
and Hospital are still down. FEMA or someone is sending in truck loads of
ice, water, MRE's by the truck load. Husband, sons, and a friend are going
again this afternoon to unload. Since last Friday, Polk Co. has had
evacuees from various locations. Last Friday morning, vehicles were lining
the hwy's around Interstate 59..... stranded. Livingston at that time was
not in the evacuation plan. Evacuees were to go North. However, LOTS of
folks couldn't get that far. Finally Livingston ISD and area churches were
asked to open their doors. Most of the out of county evacuees have left.
Now we are dealing with our in County families that have no supplies.
Walmart opened yesterday 7- about 5 to sell whatever was left on it's
shelves, which as of last friday wasn't a whole lot. Polk Co. is next to
the hardest hit east TX counties so we are not in any disaster relief plan.
Polk is one of the poorest counties in east TX. Lots of people have gone
from a little to nothing. East of Livingston has been hit hard. Please
continue to pray for the hardest hit families.

Last I heard Kc was probably going to a relative's house, not staying.
However as the rest of the population were doing the same thing on the
same day - hence 12 hour jams on the Interstate - maybe she didn't.

Hi Cindy,
Glad things were so good at home. You must have been so worried. I will be
thinking about your daughter as she waits for news.

coming home was getting as bad as leaving yesterday. It took my son 19
hours to get to Austin ( a 4 hour trip normally) he is staying till
clears out. They just got power at my brother in laws lake house last
night. Just a nightmare. Last night on the news they finally reported
31 related deaths to the traffic jam from heat and that type of thing.
They were trying to play it down saying most of those people had
pre-existing problems. But one was a 14 month old baby...
It was not handled well I do not care what anyone says there were people
evacuating from Houston by orders of the Mayor that should never have
been there. If that storm had not shifted east those people would have
been sitting ducks.

you are all in our prayers, Dawn. We spent the storm with my daughter in
Dallas so I must say there were some very bright spots in all this horror.
My SIL had offered for us to stay with her - would have been a marginally
shorter trip. Lufkin! I knew it was in the path no matter what so we
pressed on to Dallas. SIL sent pics of the damage they sustained personally
which was not too bad considering. they lost power of course and some large
trees came down, but none on the house.

as i said - despite the horrors of the drive, the only thing I'd change
would be the timing. We'd go earlier. i refuse to be someone clinging to
my roof for helicopter rescue. Could we have better predicted her path,
maybe we'd not have left. but

staying in it is much scarier to me.

why are these witches zeroing in on such poor areas? I know that some of it
is just the fact that land that is in flood zones and such is cheaper so
folks buy where they can afford to live which means buying where they are
most at risk. But it still seems just wrong that there is so much pain from
these storms that shouldn't have been.

i don't want this to get political. i'm just saddened by all the hurt
Katrina and Rita have caused.

warning - some profanity:

if i ever get to the point that i can really talk about all we saw and felt
during that drive, i'll have a lot to say on this issue. for now I'll avoid
the politics. But boy do we have flaws in this system or what.

I don't recall the exact #s but hubby saw an article last night - something
to this effect. there has been about a 14% growth in population in the gulf
states in x years (10?) but only a 6% growth in roadways. So some problems
are going to occur regardless of what the local/state govts.did. but.... we
saw a lot of things that, had they not occurred, would have eased the pain
significantly.

i want to point at one group in particular though and it isn't political,
it's societal - all the assholes who repeatedly sped up the emergency lanes,
then had to get back into the flow of traffic when either DPS showed up or
they encountered a car stuck in those very lanes (which of course, was about
every 1/2 mile at least). i believe strongly that these people (and there
were thousands I'm sure) made the trip much worse than it would have been.
My anger at them is beyond words at this point.

hmm... guess i'm processing finally. back to Schwerpunkt manufacturing!

warm waters or something cause hurricanes
We've heard very little about islands in their path. I must go see what happened
to them.
They have no way out at all, unless some were rich and had airplanes or
helicopters.
Maybe some have mountains they can go up?
I think this is a list http://stormcarib.com/hurr04.htm no update..

oprah's got a rebuilding program
http://www2.oprah.com/uyl/katrina/h...omes_main.jhtml
I think that's a mstake.
If all the very rich donated and also took half of what the world donated, they
should relocate those cities inland and make flood zones for tourist purposes
only with some superhighways to get to and from.
So there'd be less to evacuate next time.

this fact scares the daylights out of me. Atlantic is not getting any
cooler. These tropical things will keep getting spit off Africa and keep
getting sucked to the United States. I can't imagine being on one of the
islands in between. What is left???

Dawn S.

p.s. Happy Thursday.

well, I heard on the news to not be surprised if a thrid one hits same areas this year.

An article here about New Orleans http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/sepp/
The longer one (details) also has maps and it explains the sinking of the continental
shelf areas.
I copied and pasted it (for myself) because I think it will be replaced with more
recent "news" articles soon
So everybody, get it while you can.

I think they describe there an island sliding into the ocean

They're suggesting ,like me, abandoning the area but they're suggesting assimilating
all the people into other communities
(I was suggesting creating new communities, but in hindsight there may be no space left
anywhere)

I also saw some on TV saying that they were going to clean up their houses and live in
them again, but the places are full of mould. They'll never be able to get the mould
out of inside the walls or between the floorboards etc. They'd have to tear down and
rebuild from scratch (new materials) or get sick from the mould living in them.

Well, there's a lady I know with breast cancer and heart failure who has 5
or 6 dogs, lives just on the LA /texas line, where they'd showed it was
going to hit the worse. She was living in a run down house and I suspect
wouldn't have left her dogs.
So I pictured her hiding in the crawl space, under her home with her dogs
tied to timbers so they wouldn't scare and run.
Still haven't heard from her. She had nobody. I worry she's stuck there and
nobody went to rescue her. (

>
> Cindy W.

I was sure fretting over you. When I read you turned back, I was trying to
think of someone to go rescue you.
Then I realized I ddin't know where you lived. And I didn't know if you'd
gotten back out.
Only to hear that it hit (worse) where you went.
Those things are scarey, unpredictable where they'll hit and where it'll be
the worst
Glad you're okay , Cindy,
Hugs
