Author Google groups and archiving

Hi,
At the moment I have set my newsreader to allow google to archive my
messages. Are there many here who read this group through google? Because if
not, I will turn the archiving off (as google archives are accessed by
spammers)

For those not in the know, google only displays messages from people who have
archiving on, so if I turned it off you wouldnt see my messages in google
groups.

They also can get it from boards you posted on and your web page
http://makeashorterlink.com/?K192226B9

I have an email "button" on my webpage (not text) and I don't post on
forums/boards.
Why not munge your email (address) instead?

I changed my email address and started munging. I still get spam.
Friends forward my emails to others or email a group (and don't BCC the email
addresses).
Several were sending me those on online e-cards..another spam source, I suspect.
There's a variety of ways that your email address gets picked up by spammers.

I don't munge my email address because I have a separate email address for
herbwormwood which is a web based one which I check from a public computer
in our local libraries! That way I can delete all the spam safely but people
can still get in touch with me. it may take longer as I don't check it that
often !
However turning off the archive can cut down on spam. I suspect there may be
other usenet achivces where spammers can get addresses even if archiving has
ben turned off. I am careful who I give my 'private' email address to. I do
have a few accounts. I have a yahoo account too but altho I get spam on that
too its really easy to delete.
Some news services prohibit munging. I think mine does, but I am not sure.
Its a free one (News.Individual.NET)

Apparently...that's (one of the reasons) why I don't use them.

As you say, in Yahoo they're easy to delete.
Well, my ISP has a spam trap (free) that takes care of most of them. If I don't
look and see, they're deleted within 7 days. I don't bother looking.
deletes spam and virus emails very quickly. No account limit. I just get a few
daily whcih I delete with http://poppeeper.com/ No (email address) account limit.
Easy to install, easy to use.
Might work for you?

As I understand it, though, (a) google retains the messages but doesn't
make them available (b) there are other archivers who ignore requests to
not-archive.

Basically, if anyone doesn't want their postings to be read by the
general public, they shouldn't post! Or, do it via some anonymising
agent. The GCHQs of the world will however have ways of finding who you
are.

Also, if someone quotes your post when replying to it then it gets
archived anyway. On the other hand, a post which removes everything it
is replying to is usually unintelligible.

If that's the German one, then I understand that you do have to register
for it from a real address. I don't know if you can then use your
password etc from a spoofed address.
