Hi everyone!

You have all, as always, been in my thoughts. Well, I did a very dumb thing.
Yesterday was a long and stressful day and I was in more pain than usual. So
I was taking my Tramadol (or so I thought it was Tramadol) every 4 hours for
the pain. By night I was miserable -- dizzy, stomach upset, massive headache
and my body just ached. I went to take me nighttime meds and I realized what
I thought was Tramadol all day was my Plaquenil!!!! So I swallowed 4-5
Plaquenil in about 16 hours. The bottles are identical except for the labels
and and the pills are the same size and color. My husband called poison
control he was so worried. I turned out being okay -- long night, sick
stomach, had to ride out the effects and flush my system with lots of water.
Dumb, dumb, dumb!!!

Anyone ever accidently overdosed on their meds, or am I the only ditz in
this group? :-) Just had to tell you all my story. I am going to try and
get some sleep tonight. Sending good thoughts your way!

Stephanie

Oh yes, you are quite alone in this. I always get all my pills right....
even the Three white tabs that are the same Size Color and Shape, the Two
that are yellow ovals of exactly the same size, the two larger white pills
that look identical as well. and the minute I get all this figured out,
they change one of the pills.... not to look like a "new" pill, mind you,
but now to imitate one of the others who never had a "mate" before.

Be assured; this must happen to a lot of us!

I haven't overdosed on them but the look-alikes did cause me problems a few
times. Since my morning meds and night meds all looked the same except for
the addition of that little oblong pill that looked exactly like an Ultram
but smaller which looked exactly like a plaquenil but thinner... that little
pill being Ambien.

i have had a couple of very woosy days. can you say
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've also missed Plaquenil doses which after a few days made me miserable -
fever, pain, etc.

fortunately it's a fairly benign drug and while the overdose you experienced
was miserable to say the least, not likely to be dangerous. At least you
caught it when you did. Sorry you had such a bad day.

my Tramadol is now from a different company and is more ovoid than oblong.
I still have to watch out for the micro-plaquenil (Ambien) though.

have taken morning meds to go to sleep also - not dangerous but couldn't
figure out why my bladder went nuts (no ditropan) and i couldn't sleep.
sigh...

I asked my pharmacist what I could do about this problem, and after saying
"I just give the pills out, dear, I don't make them..." (yes I know that,
dude!), he said that he thinks the best solution is to have a separate pill
case for the "look alike" pills. So that then you can throw the "look
alike" pills into the second box to always make sure they are separate. It
is the best solution I have found so far. Considering the fact that almost
all the pills we take are generic, I don't think the pill sizes and colors
are going to get any better (in case something happens to set a precedent)

Honestly, the things i do make me wonder if I even have a brain.
I just finished asking the neuro doc if he could/would make my neurontin
"medical necessity" because the generic looks too much like an aspirin.
Anyways, he did but with so many dang medications I can understand how you
did that.
My biggest boo-boo is messing up and taking my evening meds in the morning
or afternoon, instead of the afternoon meds.
Problem with that is, I take Trazadone because it is a very good sleep aid
and it near knocks me out.
Oh, and whoopeee!! Hubby won 4 tickets off the radio for the circus!

I put mine in those weekly pill boxes (with a comparment for each day of
the week) in order to prevent this kind of mistake. I use
round/septagonal ones for my morning meds and rectangular ones for my
evening meds. I fill them two weeks at a time. A boring task, to be
sure, but it definitely saves wear and tear during the two weeks and
definitely helps with compliance.

I haven't accidentally overdosed as seriously you did. However, just
yesterday I realized that I'd been putting an evening dose of Celebrex
in the spot I should have put my Plaquenil. I don't know how many
weeks that means I've been doubling my daily Celebrex and missing 1/3
of my Plaquenil. :-P

Well thanks everyone - I don't feel quite so dumb now! I used to put all my
pills in a pill box but then got lazy. I think we will be going back to
doing it that way. It is hard to keep track of everything sometimes - and I
am even on less meds right now than I've been on in the past few years. Oh
well - we all have those "brain farts" as Bruce so delicately put it. :-) My
husband always tells me that for someone so smart I do some awfully dumb
things. Absent-minded professor.
