Author blood in urine-why?

Hi,
I have had traces of blood in my urine sample for over a year now.
I have a normal blood pressure. I am on warfarin with a therapeutic range of
3 to 4.5.
The doc seems to think it is because I am on warfarin but is doing a kdney
function test. I have had nepritis twice from lupus.
Can anyone here explain why blood would be in urine if the kidneys were
normal (and no recent sexual activity to cause veginal irritation)?

Thanks

Herb (or whoever), kidney stones, urinary tract infection are two
reasons for trace blood in the urine as during menses.

There are relatively inexpensive urine dipsticks that can let you test
at home. It won't get quantitative answers, but should give an
noticeable result if there's an increase in blood.

maybe that's why the doc said she might "send it off" (send the urine for lab
anylysis).
If I had a urineiry tract infection surely I would have other symptoms? I
have none. I drink a fair amount of tea, water, juice, herbal tea, barleycup
etc. No alcohol tho!
I was really wondering, if blood in urine was actually caused by being on
warfarin, what is the physiology of it? Does it mean that warfarin is making
my kidneys/bladder bleed? And if so why?

Not necessarily - if the infection is fairly confined to the kidney than you
it's possible not to have the typical pain associated with lower UTIs. And
if the infection is mild at this point.

i don't know anything about how drugs damage the kidneys so can't offer any
help there at this time.

I think another poster here has experienced symptom-free UTIs. She may
wish to comment...

Well, it thins the blood. Presumably if it gets too thin it'll leak out
at the weakest point. Do you check whatever-it-is regularly?

hi, my husband has the same problem but no meds involved;
he even had to go through a C&P and ended up with a colicky kidney attack
from a reaction to the dye they used which put him in emerg. that night for
several hours on a morphine drip and they suspected kidney stones but
testing proved them wrong.
The conclusion reached after all was said and done is that he is passing
uric acid stones which are invisible to the eye and the tests but can be
dissolved with a medication if it continues.... he has no symptoms at all
and no infections so he chose to just 'let it be' for now... if ever the
blood gets worse or any renal or gout like symptoms arise he will go back to
the urologist for another consult. For now they just check his urine now and
again and he is just fine. (he has no illnesses either btw)
Good luck with your docs!

hi,
I also have the same problem for a while now and I've been checked for
infections (none! ). My bp is very low, but am also on warfarin.
Some test have been done , but sofar nothing and next week I think they are
starting the more "in debt" tests.
I'll let you know if there ever will be a result. I'm not really that
interrested, because so many things seem to go wrong all the time, that I'm
now live each day as it comes.!!
Not much help I know, but you're not alone.
Kind regards Maria

I guess I can't add much more to those posts. It can be a number of things
to cause that amount in the urine.

Is your blood work showing any problems? at all? protein ok.
this is all taken into account to rule out kidney involvement. But most
definately can be from hidden infection, so hang in there.
all tests will help show the big picture

but my BP is normal, 110 over 70. Wouldn't a kidney infection show up with a
raised BP?
I am sorry i did not explain that the amount of blood is not visible. It only
shows up on a dipstick test.

I hope he improves. It sounds like he has been through hell.
I know someone who had kidney stones and she was in agony. She also was on
morphine and hospitalised whilst she passed them.
I have heard it is the worst pain man or woman can experience.
I understand excess calcium can cause them, well I am on calcium supplements
for osteoporosis.
But I don't have pain when passing water etc.
I will check to see if doc did actually sent the sample off and if so wait
for the result.

I called the doctor's office and apparently it was sent off to test for
nfections.
I have to call again tomorrow to see if the results arrived back.
I am quite afraid of kidney problems as I am all too aware where they can
lead and as I have a history of it I will be keeping an eye on it. Doc agreed
I could bring in a sample and have a blood pressure check every 3 months, so
at least I am now getting monitored properly for it.
